26. A SPBR Meeting

“I don’t understand.” Ferriday muttered as he read the parchment. “Why don’t I have to pay for Kelsey?” his grey eyes were confused and suspicious as they met mine.

I shrugged, trying to look innocent. “I don’t know. Maybe you’ve got friends in high places?”

      Ferriday didn’t look convinced.

“Are you going to keep Kelsey now?” I asked, praying that my terrible act hadn’t been in vain.

Fixing me with a steely glare he asked. “Yes, but did you have something to do with this, Danira?”

I feigned shock. “Me? How could I have done anything?”

“I don’t know but you were gone for a while...”

“I went for a walk. I needed to get out of the mansion.”

I didn’t know if Ferriday bought my lies but he walked away, leaving me alone. Until Kelsey appeared that was.

“Danira,” she cried, throwing her arms around my waist. “Where were you? I looked for you everywhere.”

“I just went out for a bit.”

“I’m so glad that you’re back.” Kelsey said, pulling me towards the slaves’ quarters. “Aidan and I are baking. Come and see.”

I stopped outside the kitchen and turned to face her. “Kelsey, are you still avoiding Ferriday?” I asked.

Her face fell and she gave a small nod.

I placed a hand on her shoulder. “Please try and spend some time with him. He’s a very nice person and paid a lot of gold for you. You were lucky that he was the one that bought you.”

Kelsey pulled a face and twisted a ginger curl around a finger. She had heard it all before. “I know but... he’s a vampire.”

“A good one,” I kissed her on the head.

Moving into the kitchen I found Aidan weighing out some ingredients.

“Hey,” he beamed when he saw me. “Hope you're hungry. This is the second batch we're making. The first lot should be ready soon.”

I smiled and sat down on a stool. “Do you know who's hosting the next ball?” I asked, running a hand through my hair.

Aidan gave a small shrug. “A vampire couple that I have never heard of before, Ferriday got an invitation though so they must have heard of him.”

“What are we going to do about Kelsey?” I watched as she opened the oven to check on the cakes inside.

“There’s no way that she will agree to go. It will be crawling with vampires. One of us will have to stay here with her.” Aidan told me.

      “I’ll stay then.”

He shook his head. “No way, you’re definitely going. You seem down lately. You need to go out and enjoy yourself. What’s wrong anyway?”

I looked down at my hands. “Nothing,”

...Apart from the fact that I was missing my parents.

...Apart from the fact that I ached for Ridge so much that it felt like I had lost a limb.

...Apart from the fact that I had just exchanged my blood so that Ferriday could have reduced taxes.

...Apart from the fact that my life was a mess.

I could probably do with going out and enjoying myself... scratch that I definitely needed to.

Changing the subject I grinned. “So what's going on with you and Leila?”

A blush crept onto Aidan's cheeks. “We... err... we've made out a few times.”

“Are you two going out then?” I was amused at his embarrassment.

      “Yeah, we are.”

“Good, I'm happy for you both. You better not hurt her otherwise you'll have me to deal with.” I warned.

He laughed before saying. “Believe me I have no intention of hurting Leila.”

“I'm glad to hear. Is there any news on the Infinity Blade?” I asked hopefully.

Aidan gave me a sad smile. “No, sorry,”

Groaning I dropped my head onto the counter. We needed to come up with a plan to stop the Vampire Lords, and fast.

The next day there was a SPBR meeting in Pegasus’s mansion. I was sat with a handful of other blood-slaves in the drawing room. Kelsey was seated beside me, of course, and Aidan, Leila and Scott were nearby. I knew all of the five other humans in the room from the balls. One of them was Nadia, Leila's friend. Bertie and Jayden were attending the SPBR meeting with Ferriday, Pegasus and the other members.

“Danira,” Nadia said. “Have you found your friend yet? Gina?”

I shook my head. “No not yet.”

She gave me an encouraging smile. “Well I’ll keep looking out for her then. I remember your description of her.”

      “Thanks, Nadia.”

Leila placed a hand on my shoulder. “Why don’t you tell us what your boyfriend looks like? That way we can look out for him too.” she suggested.

I didn’t say anything but my expression must have changed because Leila pulled me into a hug.

“We will find him, Danira. You’ll be reunited.”

Blinking away tears I nodded. I would find Ridge. He was what mattered most to me in the entire world. I needed to find him.

“So,” Nadia smiled nudging me with her elbow. “What’s he like?”

I blushed and felt a smile tug at my lips as I thought of Ridge. I brushed some hair behind my ear, saying quietly. “His name is Ridge. He’s tall and handsome with dark hair and eyes. He’s... twenty.”

I recalled that Ridge had been twenty when he had become a vampire, many, many years ago, but he was now three hundred and twelve so there was quite a big age difference between us, not that it mattered.

Leila giggled. “Ooh an older man how exciting.”

      She had no idea.

The guys in the room looked uncomfortable and I couldn’t really blame them.

“Ridge is an unusual name.” a girl called Teri commented. “How did you two meet?”

      “At my parents’ café,”

Leila sighed dreamily. “Was it love at first sight?”

I gave a small laugh. “No, not really. He used to tease me.”

“That’s what guys do when they like you.” Nadia gushed.

Aidan gave a small cough. “Uh we don’t,”

From where she was sat beside me Kelsey gave a giggle. “You totally do! This boy in my class at school used to pull my pigtails and that was because he liked me.”

Scott scowled. “Only the immature ones do that.”

Leila ruffled his hair. “Oh yeah? So how do the mature guys show that they like a girl, Scott?”

He looked down at his hands. “Spend time with the girl, treat her with respect.”

Nadia and Leila fell about laughing and Teri and I rolled our eyes at each other. Those two were terrible when they were together.

“Did anything happen with that boy then, Kelsey?” Aidan asked, his blue eyes twinkling.

She laughed, looking appalled. “No he was stupid. Boys are stupid.”

“Here, here,” Leila agreed with a cheer, raising a cupcake in the air before taking a big bite out of it.

The guys in the room muttered their protests and I suppressed a smirk.

Kelsey jumped up onto my lap and I kissed her head, asking. “You okay?”

She smiled and offered me a bite of her cake. I declined.

“Hey, I haven’t noticed your necklace before.” Teri said pointing at Mireille’s emerald which rested at the nape of my neck. “It's beautiful. Where'd you get it?”

“Oh that? It was a gift.”

      “Who from?” Nadia asked curious.

“Lord Luca Harlin.” Leila sang joyously.

Nadia’s mouth actually dropped open. “You mean that gorgeous vampire that dances with you at the balls?”

      I nodded, groaning inwardly.

Teri’s eyes were fixed on the emerald. “Wow he must really like you.”

“Some people have all the good luck.” Nadia sighed.
