38. Chapter Thirty Eight: Khyber

“He can’t be gahling serious,” I said quietly. Scanning through the list of names I grew angry.

Abelard had ordered one of the servants to deliver me the parchment first thing that morning. It contained the name of every eligible princess or highborn woman in the land. My brother wanted me to choose one. If I didn’t then he would.

Throwing the parchment to the floor, I got to my feet. Running a hand through my hair I sighed heavily. The only woman I wanted to marry was Samera but she would soon be wed to Omer. The thought of it made my stomach churn.

I walked to the library, planning on losing myself in a book. Mariella was there, staring out of the window, a hand resting absently on her stomach. She jumped at the sound of my footsteps.

“Good morning, Mariella,” I said, managing a small smile.

Looking slightly guilty, she replied, “Hello, Khyber.” Mariella looked like she was going to say something else but she didn’t.

Joining her at the window, I waited for her to speak. Eventually I realised what she couldn’t say. “When?” My voice was quiet.

I could feel Mariella’s gaze on me as she said, “The day after tomorrow.”

Hours later I collapsed on my bed exhausted. I was covered in sweat and was out of breath from taking my rage out on Orien. I could still hear the metallic screech of our swords clashing against each other.

I’d been hoping that I would fall straight asleep but I couldn’t. All I could think about was Samera. My heart felt like it was being crushed in a vice whenever I considered life without her. I had to see her again before the wedding. Maybe I could convince Samera to run away with me. We could do it. We could spend the rest of our lives together, but only if she said yes.
