Time is limited. Maybe not for Aria and Jessica, but for those who's lives soon run out, Death will be waiting...

4. Will - Jessica

He turned to her.

I could see it as she looked at him.

I could see it as he stared back.

Just like that I snapped out of... whatever it was.

Hidden behind the door, in the shadows, where I belonged. Where no one could see me. Where no one could love me. Because who could, when faced with Aria's kindness, her caring nature, her ability to make anyone fall in love with her?

Including the boy. Jake. He would fall in love with her, he would want her, would need her, and I would be the extra, the outsider. The mentor vampire, the one who always stood on her own.

The loner.

"So are you going to tell me how you two ended up in the woods in the first place?" Jake asked, turning back around.

Aria hesitated.

"Why were you walking round with a knife?" she asked, avoiding the question.

"Hunting," he grunted.

"So... you live here on your own then?"

He snorted, and I could hear a smile in his voice as he replied, "not out of choice. It used to be me and my dad, but he got killed."

"I'm sorry," she leaned forward, and touched his back. "How did it happen?"

"Animal attack."

"I'm sorry," she repeated, and he turned to look at her again, and again their eyes met, and again I felt it, I felt it, that pain, that anger, that loss.

I'd had a boy like Jake once. Will. Will. My Will. Dead. Gone. Forever. I still saw him in my sleep. A beautiful boy, with curling brown hair and the cheekiest smile you could imagine. And he died.

“So you going to answer my question?” Jake asked.

“We were hunting.”

Jake’s eyes passed over her torn dress. “Hunting.” He repeated.

I closed my eyes. It was too familiar, too familiar, too familiar. I met Will in a cabin, in the woods. We spent the night together, spent weeks together, before he found out what I was, who I was. And he didn’t run. He stayed with me, even when the mature vampires came to hunt me down for killing Aria’s mother.

And they ripped his throat out for fraternizing with me, even though he was an innocent, even though he did nothing wrong.

And I was forced to mentor Aria.

Her fault.

It is her fault he’s dead.

I can’t be happy, I can’t be with my Will. So she won’t be with Jake. Ever.
