Confessions of a shopaholic

This poem was created for my solo piece in Expressive Arts. We were given many stimuli and had to come up with our own unique ideas. My idea was about debt, but not the normal depressing stories about debt, it is about the life of a shopaholic and how her love of shopping brought her saddness. However, this story has a happy ending as the shopaholic decides to change her lifestyle and get herself out of her money troubles. Message behind this piece: Take responsibility for your own actions and be willing to face up to the consequences. Also don't give in to temptation!

1. Confessions of a shopaholic

I love to shop,

I love clothes,

I love bags,

I love shoes,

I love the feeling it gives to me when I buy something new.

Gucci, Prada, D&G, Louis Vuitton,

I’ve got it all,

Spending money makes me happy until I can’t spend anymore.

Be ever drunken with happiness,

With wine, with designer and with shoes!

But be ever drunken.

Every store card that I’ve got,

And trust me, I’ve got a lot,

Declined, rejected, there’s nothing left,

Then it finally hit me,

Maybe I’ve spent too much.

Letters start piling up,

Telling me I need to pay back all this money,

But how can I?

No job, no money, no nothing,

Just knee high in debt and designer clothes.

What should I do?

Someone please help…

I call on my friends,

But they just turn away,

It’s time for me the face the truth,

And stop running from my problems,

I know it wont go away by its self.

So, now I’ve got to make a plan,

To fix what I made wrong.

So I stop to think, how can I make things right?

How could I possibly pay back all that money?

I look around and all I can see is,

Clothes, shoes and bags,

Then I thought to myself, do I really need all of this?

My heart was screaming yes,

But my head was telling me no.

I knew this was the reality of it all.

The solution was right there in front of me,

I need to sell everything,

Think of the money I could make from it!

It was the perfect idea.

I’ve got to be strong and sell it all,

It’s the only way to get out of this debt,

I must be strong.
