7. Out of the Darkness

A figure emerged out of the darkness as Dad and I grasped each others arms. A slow, dull raspy voice started to speak as the clinking started up again.

Tito fell forward suddenly on all fours, his eyes red-rimmed and watery, his body shaking, his face frozen in shock. Me and Dad didn't hesitate, rushing forward and embracing a shell-shocked Tito.

"What's wrong? What happened?" Dad demanded,

"I-I...it..." Tito began before his face crumpled and he dissolved into tears,

"Hey" I put my arms on Tito's shoulder and rocked him gently, " It's okay, you're safe, you're with us now"

Tito nodded, sniffing quietly.

"What happened?" I asked, leaning closer to the shaken child,

"There...there was another me and h-he tried to take me" He managed to say between sniffs

"Where is he?" Dad asked,

Tito raised his bony arm and pointed with a long, outstretched finger to the end of the narrow corridor clouded in darkness. A cold wave rippled through my body as I exchanged glances with Dad. Slowly, we got to our feet and descended into the black, dad in front, me behind him and Tito behind me.

The clinking noise still remained as we advanced and occasionally came the sound of wings flapping.

"Who's there? Show yourself!" Dad ordered loudly,

There was a small buzzing sound like a fly flying really fast and then the clinking stopped. Dad froze and silence filled the air as we waited for whatever was coming next. A small breeze blew through the cave and then suddenly accelerated into a full force wind blowing us back and out of the darkness came a blinding light and out of that light....came another Tito.

Tito screamed and clung to me, tears spilling down his freckled cheeks and I saw the unmistakable glare of fear in his eyes. I took Tito's hand and tugged at Dad's shirt.

"Run" I commanded as we turned on our heels and bolted back down the corridor.

We side-stepped into the nearest room and slammed the door behind us. I looked for the nearest heavy piece of furniture and with Dad's help, dragged it in front of the door, praying that the clone wouldn't be able to break in. From behind the door, a rattling noise emerged, like someone was trying to pick the lock. Tito stood behind us motionless and stricken.

"How did they get in?" Dad panted heavily, looking at me for an answer,

"What makes you think there's more than one?" I returned the question,

"If Tito's clone is anything like the original Tito, he won't be able to do much, he must of come with backup"

I nodded. "I don't know then. There was clinking and rustling and then the wind force of a train and he was just...there"

Dad ran his fingers through his overgrown hair and swallowed hard. He lowered himself onto the bed behind him.

"We have to go" He stated a few minutes later.

I turned to look at him but he stared back.

"Even if he came alone..." he motioned towards the door, "He will go back and tell the others and we'll have a whole army of them here"

"Maybe that's what we need though...all of them in one place?" I suggested,

"No. There's only eight of us left. We can't afford to lose any more..."

"Yeah I know" I snapped, feeling as if he was blaming me for mum.

"Perry..."

"No dad, this isn't the time. We need to help Tito" I reminded him.

Tito stood rigid in the centre of the room watching the door intensely.

"We need to play to Tito's weaknesses, he's not different from his doppelganger" I began,

"Perry, Tito's doppelganger came out of nowhere and all of humanity but us is dead because of them, I don't think we have a chance even if we 'play to their weakness'"  Dad sighed,

"Well can we at least try something instead of just...just sitting here!" I shouted angrily, sick of all his excuses.

Dad rested his head in his hands and breathed exasperatedly making me angrier.

"Arghh!" I screamed, knocking a chair to the floor in my rage.

"Perry, pull yourself together!" Dad bellowed at me, "It's us against them so we have to stick together, okay?"

Before I could reply, a small voice interuppted us.

"It's stopped" Tito remarked quietly.

Dad and I turned towards him wondering what he was talking about.

"The noise...it's stopped" He repeated.

Dad and I got to our feet simultaneously and blocked Tito.

We were ready for anything.
