3. Not Knowing

There are many pros and cons to working in a news centre. Pro- being the first to hear every piece of news, gossip and information. Con- Hearing every piece of bad news and having to bear the bad news to the world.

I can't say I've gotten used to it but I take it far better than when i started here. Bad nnws was always flowing in; countries destroyed by natural disasters, death, poverty and injustice filled my ears everyday. Never something like this.

We found out in an email...can you imagine? I sat at my desk, tapping a pencil repeatedly on my desk as I opened up my emails and clicked on the first one.

'Announcement' was the subject line, written as if it was a miniscule matter like the coffee machine was out of order or the east wing corridor was being closed due to constructions. That's all I expected.

I scrolled down,

'Dear Employee,

I regret to inform you that as of yesterday, America was officially declared under high alert due to an epidemic. Following a science experiment and malfunctioning equipment, hostile and highly dangerous patients have escaped into the state of Georgia. They have not confirmed as to whether they have weapons but have reportedly killed over 4000 American citizens already. There are said to be hundreds of these volatile people and are not to be approached if spotted. A report will be released on Friday with a description of what they look like. The President of the United States, Mr Reuben S. McCann, has evacuated the country but the threat remains that these test subjects could travel to other parts of the world and repeat their actions. For this reason, we have decided to shut down all news and network broadcasting centres with connections to other countries to minimise spreading as the country of England goes under lockdown. We also ask that this new can be kept under wraps until the PR being released next week. This will avoid panic and allow the governement to deal effectively, quickly and without disturbances. Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerly,

Dave Kennet

CEO of British News Broadcasting, BNB'

'Is this a joke?!' I thought, 'Is this someone's sick idea of a joke?!'

I glanced around waiting for the camera crew to jump out but I only saw a sea of my colleagues all at their desks reading the same email.

I sat in my office chair for an hour, not sure of what to do next. Then, when I could make a little bit of sense of the situation, I went outside to the smokers area to phone my family.

The words from the letter swam around my head.

My sister, Ruby, picked up and before I could plan my words carefully, everything tumbled out my mouth. There was a silence at the end and then she started to cry. She didn't need to question me or check if I was telling the truth; she knew when i was being honest and when I was joking. I wanted to cry too but I needed to be strong for her.

Five minutes later, her sobs died down and she started talking again, her voice shaking, "Harry...We're all going to die, aren't we?"

It was a thought that had been floating around my mind since the moment I read the letter. I didn't know what to say to her but the truth was I didn't know. She started to weep again, this time louder and then a few seconds later, I heard Tony, her husband take the phone off her and try to console her.

"Hello, who's this?" Tony asked through gritted teeth, obviously angry that someone had upset his wife.

"It's Harry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry" I  shook my head, feeling as if I was about to break down into tears.

"What? Harry, what's wrong? Why's Ruby so..." He asked confused,

"Listen Tony, I have to go...I'll call you later and explain" I replied and hung up before he could ask anything else.

What was happening?

I stormed back into the building, frustrated and clueless. I sat down at my desk and tried to continue work like I had been before the email.

I couldn't though. Over and over again in my mind, I kept hearing the same question fall from Ruby's mouth.

Were we all going to die?

And then a single word popped into my head.

Yes.
