8. Gone In The Wind

Dad edged towards the door cautiously and with one swift jerk yanked open the door before bounding backwards. A cold fast wind blew through silently and unnoticed but sending a small shudder through me. Behind the swinging door was nothing. An empty door frame. Just air.

I looked at Dad, bewildered but alert just in case anything tried to jump out. I took a hold of Tito's hand and tugged him forward slightly through the door. The landing was empty, the front door was closed and the surrounding rooms were deserted.

"How could have he escaped?! Where is he?" Dad shouted, angry and confused.

I shrugged exasperately. I was just as clueless as him.

"I don't know, I didn't see him" I replied annoyed, "Did you?"

"No, I just said---" Dad began before I interrupted,

"I was talking to Tito" I sighed, rolling my eyes, "Tito! Did you see that--"

I looked around for Tito who seconds ago was just grasping my hand for dear life.

"Tito? Tito!" I repeated, circling the landing, "Where did he go?"

"He's here" Dad shouted from the next room. The room we first hid in.

I changed direction and entered the room. Tito stood rigid staring at the doorframe. The same position he stood just before we opened the door.

"You scared me for a minute there" I laughed weakly. Tito stood oddly, almost possessed or ito's golden rimmed eyes looked cold and frozen yet fiery as they burned through the icy air.

Icy air.

My mind flew back to the moment Dad opened the door. The small wind that blew through the door. That cold wind that was so fast nobody suspected a thing.

I approached Dad ever so slowly and sidled up beside him. He stood sitting on the wooden high bench behind Tito. Tito's back faced us but he could still hear us so being careful was key. He was the closest the door and blocked our only exit; I couldn't let on anything.

I looked at Dad and waited for him to meet my eyes. Dad immediately knew something was up and motioned for me to follow him,

"We have to find the clone. He could be anywhere" Dad said, acting concerned. Both me and him strolled out the room past Tito and into the next room.

Dad closed the door and gave me a hard stare, waiting for me to speak. I hesitated, trying to collect my thoughts and say them in the least craziest way.

"I think I know what happened to the other Tito" I stated slowly.

Dad eyes were still locked on mine.

"They've adapted Dad. The clones. When you opened the door, there was a wind...what if that wind was the clone?"

"Perry..." Dad sighed, finally showing some emotion on his face. I had had these 'theories' before and they had turned out to be wrong; Dad obviously thought that I was just exaggerating.

"No Dad, think about it, how can there be wind in an underground cave?!" I demanded,

"I didn't see anything" Dad shrugged,

"You never seen anything!" I growled,"Why can't you just believe me for once?"

Dad looked at the floor breathing heavily and suddenly I knew.

"It was Mum, wasn't it?" My voice was incredibly low, "You think it's my fault she was taken"

Dad said nothing. The air filled with heavy tension like a cloud of rain just ready to burst. Then for the first time in my life, I saw my Dad cry. He crumpled into tears, sobbing so loud, it sent a twinge through my heart. I watched as the tears streamed down his face and he shook his head from side to side.

I wanted to go over and hug him and tell him everything would be alright. But I knew this wasn't the time. I edged closer to him as his sobs subdued.

"Tito's the clone, Dad. That wind, it entered him and he's a clone now. Whether you believe me or not, I know it's true"

"OK" Dad nodded, his voice choked and hoarse, "OK Perry, I believe you"
