22. Explanations

Father was sat at the kitchen table! My jaw dropped a mile and I just stood staring unable to believe was I was witnessing. He and mother stared back at me for a second before turning pale and exchanging a glance that I had to come to recognise as one that meant I had just walked in on something I was not supposed to. That told me everything I needed to know, Father had been here alive and Mother had pretended he was dead to me, I couldn't believe either of my loving parents could do anything this cruel. "Explain! Now!" I snapped disgustedly.
They both hesitated, but on seeing my stone-like face my mother began to speak. "Your father is home..."
"Obviously." I practically snarled.
"Well, the good thing is that he didn't die," she tried to smile but failed miserably, "..but the not quite so good thing would be that no one can know that he didn't die."
"Why not?!" I demanded.
At this point Father stepped in in a harsh cutting tone, "you don't know what it was like out there, they captured me, I was in a Prisoner of War camp, they would have tortured me, killed me if I hadn't talked."
"Talked about what?"
"Our plans, the war effort, our tactics and strategies, further planned attacks. Everything I knew about the war, in short a lot." He took a deep breath, "Attacks have failed, men have died because of me."
"How did you get out?" I breathed.
"The Germans let me go once the attacks I'd told them about had happened - my informations had been used and it was too late to tell those in charge what I'd done. They knew that to send me back would mean my death anyone, they used their spies here to let my superiors know what I've done, there's a price on my head."
I know that most people would say Father shouldn't have told the Germans anything, should have sacrificed himself for the war effort but in reality human instinct is to survive, which is why torture is so effective. So I knew it wasn't Father's fault why he did what he did, I was shocked but I was also selfish and I would rather Father survived than anything else. So instead of shouting or looking appalled I ran at him and hugged him hard like I was a young child again.
While a hugged him everything seemed to make sense in my mind, mother's sudden recovery. A small thought also stirred in the back of my mind; mother had father, she was not alone, she didn't need me, I could go with Jack. But Jack had left and I didn't know when he would return. I had missed my chance by a matter of hours.
