The Other Side of the Story

The normal high school student, Raven, needs to analyse the famous fairy tale of Snow White. Thinking this as easy, she soon uncovers the truth about the perfect Snow White, and realizes it is much deeper, raw and tragic than the story we all know so "well".

22. Right or Wrong?

The Queen could not believe what the servant had just said. Snow White was alive? She did everything in her power to act surprised; not that Snow White was alive, but that she was dying. But in truth it was the opposite.

“She is dying?” Ravenna added a look of horror, to make her concern believable.

“Yes, but barely. I must leave, they need me to assist.” and he rushed off. Was this a trick? Snow White couldn’t be alive. She was lying in the forest floor, dead by now. After a couple of minutes of thinking her actions through the Queen finally followed the stream of helpers, towards the room in which she lay.

When the big oak doors opened, a sight so shocking almost made the Queen feint. She had been in denial, not believing Snow White was there. But against all odds, there she was. Lying on the bed in a regular servant’s room, the sheets embroidered with intricate designs, now bestowing a dying woman. She walked into the corner and watched. Dread filled her stomach as she saw the helpers shuffle around Snow White, putting things in her mouth, cooling her forehead with a damp cloth, and measuring her heartbeat. Ravenna stood with her hand covering her mouth, as she was still in shock. Suddenly she was feeling sick. The Queen had come to terms with the fact that she had killed a murderer. That was fair, but unbearable. But now that same murderer was alive, but dying. So now she had to watch it happen? Ravenna blamed it on karma, except it still wasn’t reasonable. Snow White had killed her son.

Snow White’s heart was beating quicker than she had ever experienced, yet she thought nothing of it. The venom was slowly closing up her veins, making it harder for her to breathe. As her body got jostled and turned by many people she felt the blood rush through her body. Her cheeks flushed red, as it got difficult for the blood to circulate. Slowly and painfully, she turned her head to the right, and saw a person that sent icy drips of sweat down her back. Ravenna. In an instant Snow White knew exactly why she was lying in a bed, treated like a diseased person. Ravenna. Even in her deluded state of mind, two and two clicked. The apple. Ravenna. Revenge. The forest. It became to much information at once as she realized what was going on. She had been poisoned.

As this revelation occurred, her stomach churned. She hit the arms that were working on her body away, turned over, and threw it all up.

The Queen was feeling horrible. She knew not what to do anymore. She had attempted to kill someone, and now that person was dying in front of her. But Snow White had mercilessly killed Charles, Ravenna’s son. What was it she had done?
