30. Realizing

After that Hunter and I grew silent. His presence made me feel very self-conscious which disturbed my ability to work. There was only half an hour left now, so I decided to start reading. I felt the need to fill the silence between us, but I couldn’t think of anything to say. I took the risk and looked up from my computer, to see what he was doing. Quickly I averted my gaze towards my screen again when I saw he was reading in a book. When I was loading chapter nineteen, I could see from the corner of my eye that he glanced at me. I ignored it and concentrated on the story.

Ravenna had been knocked out. The impact her skull had made with the floor had punctured something in her right temple. She was still bleeding when her personal doctor had been summoned. Quickly he asked for a damp cloth, and one of the servants came running with all his equipment. He placed the cloth on her forehead, to stop the bleeding and to cool down the fever, which had started when she fell. Ravenna moaned when he turned her head slightly to see the damage. She was unconscious, but her body still reacted to the movement. The doctor took this as a good sign. As he worked on her, he went through the normal procedure. He asked some servants to cut up the corset she was wearing, and the emerald green dress that was tightened painfully around her chest and waist. Underneath she was wearing white stockings, undergarments, and a white slip, so nothing was revealed. Then they found a sheet and carefully placed it around her. The doctor tested her temperature, her breathing, and examined the wound. The shock and pain from the bash, had sent her body into a frenzy resulting in blacking out. Now that the bleeding had lightened the doctor declared the Queen soon would be up and running. She just needed to rest for a while. The side-effects could result in headaches and dizziness, but nothing crucial had occurred, other than the blood loss.

In Snow White’s department, the spectators were in awe. After Irene’s sudden outburst and actions, Snow White had healed in a surprisingly quick manner. None of the doctors had ever seen such a hasty recovery. It didn’t seem real and then in an instant, she looked like her old self. After tossing and turning she had finally fallen asleep again, and after some standard checkups, the doctors had come to the conclusion that she would survive, as if nothing had happened. It would take a couple of days though and a lot of rest, but she would be fine in a short period of time. Her brain would return to normal before long, as would her memory.

The King had been paralyzed throughout all this. He had just been standing in the corner, horrified by all these events. His trustworthy servant had literally been dying in front of him, yet there was nothing he could do. He didn’t understand what had happened. James decided to recall everything that had transpired in the past hectic hours.

He had been hunting. He had seen Snow White lying in the snow, with a red apple in her hand. He had kissed her thereby saved her. After that everything had been fine. She was tired, worn and dizzy, but nothing had happened. Then they had arrived and she nearly fell to the ground. Doctors, nurses and hired workers had all swarmed around her and had treated her until she started heaving and coughing. It had been scary, that moment when she looked rabid and froth was flowing from her mouth and not being able to help. And then the sudden outburst of Irene, proudly holding the antidote, she had called it, and the magic effect of the liquid she had poured into Snow White’s mouth. After that, everything had been okay.

Suddenly the King realized why he was feeling so uncomfortable and hollow. The thought had been nagging at him but James was so scared he couldn’t move or think.

But when all the different feelings and reactions inside him had settled, a little voice timidly said in the back of his mind:

If Snow White needed antidote, then who had poisoned her? James could feel the answer surfacing inside him, and he felt like crying when he realized the only person who would have an agenda for doing such a thing.

Ravenna.
