The Other Side of the Story

The normal high school student, Raven, needs to analyse the famous fairy tale of Snow White. Thinking this as easy, she soon uncovers the truth about the perfect Snow White, and realizes it is much deeper, raw and tragic than the story we all know so "well".

39. Meeting

Ravenna had never noticed the different ceilings of the palace. Always had she been scurrying about, not taking in the magnificent paintings and designs that were bestowed upon the walls. All of the days spent taking care of her duties, Ravenna never stopped and looked at her surroundings and appreciated the small things in her daily life.
Later that day she would gaze up on the ceilings and hate herself for wasting the precious moments of her short life.

She walked on, her feet cold from the stone marble, as she thought of how she would tackle the next few minutes. Ravenna had arrived at Snow White’s door. She did not know whether an alive or dead girl lay on the other side, but was determined to find out.

In a way, she felt best not knowing. If Snow White really was dead, how could Ravenna convince anyone that she was not the murderer? And if Snow White was dead, how could she live with herself?

No, she thought. She murdered Charles! If she is dead she will be rotting in Hell by now, which is exactly where she arose from when she was born.

But what if she was alive? Ravenna had come to terms with Snow White being dead and gone forever. If Snow White was alive, that would mean that her attempt of avenging her son and protecting her family had failed. She had failed. A single tear slipped down her cheek as she thought of her sweet daughter, and the husband who did not trust her anymore. And her son who was no longer breathing.

The Queen took a deep breath and opened twisted the doorknob.

Snow White had been thinking about her encounter with the mysterious mirror, which she had more or less angered and destroyed. Her head swum with pictures of the mirror and the threat it had made her.

“I will take my revenge, in a way you would never expect.”

She became anxious as she thought of the broken glass that had lain at her feet. It was just a dream, she tried to convince herself. But something about its voice had unsettled something deep down in her soul. How could an imaginative figure in any way hurt her? As she pondered this, Snow White studied her body. She wore a white hospital dress and no shoes. Her feet were freezing cold, but she had no socks or shoes to put on.

Snow White had regained most of her strength, from before she was poisoned. Anger flashed viciously inside her, as she thought of the poison, and stood up from the bed and walked around the room. She felt restless. She had to do something.

Her plan was almost accomplished. She was so close at winning. This turn of events had actually turned out for the better. Now there was no way anyone could believe that Ravenna was innocent. And the best part was that she wasn’t. Attempting murder is a felony, Snow White thought to herself and chuckled slightly. Ravenna had opened the door to her own destruction, all the while making room for Snow Whites mission of becoming Queen.

The thirst for power overwhelmed Snow White, as she brushed a lock of her black hair out of her eyes. As she circled the room, thinking of her next move, she passed a mirror. At first her heart skipped a beat, but she relaxed when she saw her reflection. A fair complexion, full red lips and thick black hair. She looked healthy again. Her recovery was near and she was coming back stronger than ever.

She imagined herself in a wedding gown, her hair set in a royal fashion and the image of herself walking down the aisle. Not with her father though; he was probably dead and if he was alive, Snow White had no need to contact him.
No, she would walk alone. That would be her clear statement to the kingdom: I am independent. I am vicious. I am undefeatable.

At the end of the church - beside the pastor - the king would stand; waiting only for her. The crowd would gasp in awe of her extravagant beauty. Snow White found herself stroking her cheek, in admiration of herself.

Sadly, she was disturbed as the doorknob twisted and a woman stepped inside.
