The Other Side of the Story

The normal high school student, Raven, needs to analyse the famous fairy tale of Snow White. Thinking this as easy, she soon uncovers the truth about the perfect Snow White, and realizes it is much deeper, raw and tragic than the story we all know so "well".

9. Fear

I was speechless. That was horrible. Who could do such a thing? I had to know what was going to happen. It was so interesting I couldn’t stop.

I had almost forgotten that my father had come home from Abu Dhabi, but I was reminded by the familiar sound of our doorknob being turned. I really didn’t feel like talking to my parents. It hurt that my dad was leaving so soon, and I had learned from experience that if I ignored my feelings, they would go away. I decided to let them be alone together, so I could get back to my work. But of course I was disturbed.

“Raven, dinner’s ready!” my mother’s voice filled the silence that had been so peaceful. She sounded gleeful. Small muffles of laughter sounded all the way up to my room, so I wanted them to spend time together.

“I’m not hungry, I just ate. I’ll come down later,” I yelled back. No answer. Good. She had already turned her attention towards my father. Now they could have there their quality time, and I could be alone. Just like always.

"What are you doing here?" Ravenna snapped, looking into the eyes of the beautiful young face.

"I've come here to warn you, Ravenna. You know exactly what the King thinks of you, so you should listen to me." Snow White explained, freezing in the cold. "He thinks you poisoned Charles. He saw you with the bottle."

"That bottle was filled with serum, for my plants. I poured it into the dirt, so they'll survive through the winter. And why on Earth should I believe anything you say? You betrayed me, lied, and turned the King against me," Ravenna drew her shawl tighter around her shoulders, as the snow began to fall harder than before.

"Because your daughter has the same fate as your deceased son. And there's no way you can stop it from happening."

"How would you know that?" Ravenna felt only hatred towards this young soul, so sickly twisted.

"I know, as I did it the first time. I poisoned young Charles, and Rosa is next." Ravenna stiffened as these words of disgust left Snow White's mouth. All this time it had been her. That's why she lied to the King. The Queen swallowed her rage and misery, and through gritted teeth she said the words:

"You sick child. I will protect my own no matter what, and I will tell the King the horrid truth about you." And with that she swiftly walked away.

"He'll never believe you." Snow White muttered with an edge of confidence.
