The Other Side of the Story

The normal high school student, Raven, needs to analyse the famous fairy tale of Snow White. Thinking this as easy, she soon uncovers the truth about the perfect Snow White, and realizes it is much deeper, raw and tragic than the story we all know so "well".

16. Dwarfs

Outside the rain had turned to snow, resulting in slush idly resting on the street. Without any energy left, I simply trudged through the mixture, not even trying to avoid it.

When I came home, I quickly jumped into the shower. The warm water ran softly through my hair. I imagined it was summer, and that the water was rain. Without even noticing, tears sprang from my eyes. They collaborated with the flowing water, so I didn’t really think about it. My body and mind couldn’t hold in the disappointment anymore. I just wanted my father to come home. The little make-up I used was smudged all over my face when I looked in the mirror.

Once I had cleaned myself and dried my hair, I plumped down into my cushioned chair, standing before my laptop. I quickly lifted the screen, resulting in the Windows logo to show.

Thunder sounded outside. Then lightning. I was afraid the power would go out, but forgot about it when Google Chrome opened. Even if our electrician failed, my computer could survive for two hours at least, so I wasn’t worried.

I clicked on favorites and soon enough chapter ten was displayed on my screen. I snuggled up under my thick winter blankets, on my bed and got comfortable, before reading further.

Snow White was greeted by seven small men, as she walked into their home. Happy lead her into their dining room, and she was offered some hot water and a place to sit. Snow White looked at their belongings. Grimy plates, dirty cups, and seven beds, all in one big room. The house had different sections, but no walls separated the house. Outside stood a little shed, filled with saws, hammers, shovels and many other tools. Snow White felt rather uncomfortable, surrounded by these men, running around the house, trying to clean some of the mess up.

"I'm Doc. What's your name?" Another man held out his hand as a gesture for her to take it. When looking at the brown smudge that had settled under Doc's nails, Snow White declined.

"I am Snow White. I am looking for ten Velvet Stem mushrooms on the other side of the forest, so I cannot stay very long." she said firmly.

"Well of course. So that's why you're wandering the forest?" a very sleepy looking fellow chimed in.

"Yes," Snow White looked at all of them and wondered aloud: "Where do you work?" A very grumpy, small man answered this question. His voice was gruff and hard to decipher the words he said.

"We are lumbers. We cut down trees so we can get warmth in the winter. And in the summer we are coal miners, which we sell to get a little extra money." He was half the size of Snow White and was wearing a simple shirt, and farmer’s pants.

"I see. If you don't mind, may I ask why you all are so small? You all seem to be midgets." Curiosity had gotten the hold of Snow White, and she did want to know why these men were almost the size of a dwarf.

"Well, if you must know, we are rather poor." The sleepy one huffed and turned around.

"That does not answer my question. Just because you are poor, has no effect on your height?"

"Haha! Has no effect you say. It has every effect. You are so stinking rich you can eat whatever you like anytime! We work all day and all we eat is a mere roll of bread, some soup and hot water. Our nutrition is so low we stopped growing when we were ten years old."  Grumpy had taken over again and yelled this, almost as an accusation.

"I am sorry for disturbing you in that way. Here is another bun of bread, for your nutrition. Thank you for the visit, but I must really be on my way now." Snow White had been surprised at the tone Grumpy had used. She was used to everyone adoring her, not detesting. She turned around but not before noticing the new atmosphere in the room. The bread had added an effect. The seven small men stared at it as if it was glowing.

"Thank you! Thank you so much." They all murmured in adoration as Snow White swiftly walked out in to the cold forest.
