2. Versatility is the Key to Success

One day Vikram’s class teacher informed his parents about the Annual Sports Meet. A boy who was never allowed to play, was forced to participate in all athletic events. He couldn’t reach the finish line in some long distance races, while in the others, he fainted mid-way. He came last in all the other events. A boy who had always stood first in his class, in academics, felt like a loser. No one was sympathetic towards him. His friends bullied him and his father didn’t talk to him for two days.

After this, his parents coaxed his class teacher to allow him to participate in an inter-house Skit Competition. He was given the opportunity. The poor lad forgot his lines and his ‘House’ lost. All his peers insulted him and his parents offered no support, instead they lamented his incompetence. The winner had turned into a regular loser. Everyone made fun of him. He went into a depression.

Next, there was an inter-house quiz Competition at school. This time Vikram’s father wanted him to leave no stone unturned. Apart from his course books, he was forced to devote at least three hours every day, after coming back from school, to reading General Knowledge books. For the next two weeks, he slept for not more than three hours, everyday. There were dark circles, under his eyes. He had also lost a lot of weight. However, his parents didn’t relent.
