3. The Visit

The visit happened that day, a month after Elle's death, when Megan lay crying behind her closed door. With no one to talk to, she had resorted to crying whenever she was alone and putting on a brave face at school. Her family didn't care, Elle's refused to see her and all their friends were no use. They either refused to accept it had happened or were too self-obsessed to care about someone else's feelings.

So, she was alone.

She pushed her head into her pillow to drown out the sounds of her wailing and to mop up her tears. She wanted Elle! She needed her best friend! The way she could always make her smile, make her laugh, make her happy. She needed that.

Megan remembered how there was one word that would always make them laugh. She didn't know why - just some weird inside joke from when they were little. Whenever either of them said the  word "yoghurt" they would erupt into laughter, one of those amazing attacks of giggles that lasted forever. Then, when they had finally stopped, they'd look at each other and start again. Megan smiled at the memory.

"Yoghurt," she whispered. She didn't understand why; maybe just to see if it helped her feel closer to Elle, or to help her laugh again. It didn't work. She buried her head further into her pillow.

Then she heard a giggle.

She turned, expecting to see her unsympathetic brother there laughing at her. But she didn't. She saw Elle sitting in the corner of her room, a massive smile plastered on her face.
