6. Chapter Six

Sleep had not come easily last night, I was so excited about my date with Lucas that I couldn't succumb to my dreams. By morning, I had had about five hours sleep, yet I still felt fresh.

I shrugged out of my nightclothes and jumped in the shower, letting the hot beads of water glide through my hair and down my body.

After my shower, I spent the day trying to decide what to wear on our date. When I finally decided I shouldn't make it look very sophisticated and put on a pair of blue jeans and my favourite black top. I tied my hair up in a fancy way and prayed to God he thought I looked good.

By 5.40PM, I was ready. It had been a long day and my bedroom floor was covered in clothes that weren't good enough for me tonight.

I spent the next hour nervously pacing back and forth in front of the door, and when the door bell finally rung, I flung the door open, my heart pounding with anticipation. Tonight would be perfect.

"Reid?!" I squeaked. "What the hell are you doing here?"

I was suddenly furious with him, why couldn't he just leave me the hell alone?

"I told you I was coming by, Ali," he said, frowning. He tried to push passed me, to get inside, but I blocked the door. If he came into this house, he would never leave. "What is wrong with you? You've been ignoring me for two weeks!"

"Oh, for Christ sake Reid, I don't want to talk to you!" I yelled, trying to push him away from my house, but he stood still.

"What has gotten into you?" he snapped. "We've been best friends for ten years, Ali! You really want to throw it away because of a damn kiss?"

"If that's what it takes to get you to leave me the hell alone, then yes!" I screamed at him, finally managing to shove him off the doorstep. He stumbled back, and before he left, he looked at me with pure hurt in his eyes.

I slammed the door, my heart pounding, hate and adrenaline coursing through my veins. Staring in the mirror in the hall, I fixed my hair and waited for Lucas.

The doorbell rang ten minutes after.

I flung it open, if it was Reid, I would seriously kick off.

Lucas smiled at me, but when he saw the anger in my eyes, he suddenly looked worried.

"Ali?" he asked, concern in his eyes. "Are you okay?"

"Yes, yes I'm fine, let's go," I replied, stepping out of the house and locking the door behind me.

"We're going to the bowling alley, let's hope you can bowl," he laughed and opened the car door for me.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at the bowling alley. I loved to bowl but the truth was, I couldn't do it. I failed badly at it.

Don't make a fool of yourself, Ali, I told myself harshly.

The bowling alley was packed, the sound of people chatting and laughing filled my ears.

Lucas led me upstairs to a little cafe. He took me to an empty table in the middle of the room and handed me one of the two menus on the table.

"Ali, you still look upset," Lucas stated, worriedly.

"No, no, I'm fine!" I answered, but who was I trying to reassure? Me or him?

I should feel bad at the way I treated Reid, but I didn't. I had had enough of his...obsessiveness.

"Why don't you tell me something about you?" I asked, interested.

"I'd rather not."

I frowned. What had he done in his life that was so awful? Was he a criminal? Oh God, was I on a date with a serial killer?

Lucas laughed, but there was regret in his eyes.

"I'm in debt to someone," he said quietly. He suddenly looked alarmed and cautious. Was someone out to kill him?

Suddenly, there was a gunshot downstairs and loud, screams filled the room.

"Ali, I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have brought you here," Lucas said hastily, grabbing my arm and pulling me up from my seat, he dragged me towards a fire escape, flung open the doors and pulled me down.

"Wait! Lucas! What's happening?" I yelled at him, trying to pull free, but he had an iron grip on my arm.

When we reached the bottom, three oldish men dressed in black, stood waiting for us, staring at us with lethality in their black eyes.

I noticed that beyond the doors behind the three men, everyone was silent, were they all dead? But I distinctly remember there only being one gun shot.

"Alex," Lucas muttered, shoving me behind him.

"I see you have brought a friend," the one in the middle said, he must be Alex. He was also the one who had fired the gun as he clutched a small gun in his hand. I stared at him in awe, his face was old on minute...and slowly returning to youth. The wrinkles faded, the grey in his hair returned to black. He was beautiful. I noticed the two men with him had changed too. It was like they were twenty again.

"Leave her alone, she has nothing to do with you," Lucas spat.

"Oh, but that is where you are wrong, you are in debt to me, I have the right to take what I please," Alex hissed, I could barely see now, Lucas had me pinned behind him. "You borrowed time from me, time you have not given back. I have come to reclaim what is mine."

Alex shoved Lucas out of the way, as if he weighed nothing more than a feather. He grabbed me and threw me on the floor.

"No!" Lucas yelled, trying to scramble to his feet, but the other men had pinned him down.

"I am a time-snatcher, this is what I do," Alex laughed, evilly. "You shouldn't have asked to borrow my time, Lucas. As you have not given back the seventy years of my life that you borrowed, I will drain the seventy years of life that your girlfriend possesses. Maybe then you'll learn not to mess with me."

I was confused. Was he some sort of wizard? No, not wizard, a monster? Then it clicked, was Alex like a loan shark? But instead of loaning money, he loaned time? His own time? And if you did not pay back the time you have borrowed, you must face the wrath of the time-snatchers. He must have frozen time in the bowling alley, that's why no one had come to save me! They were all frozen!

I started thrashing my arms and kicking my legs, I had to get free! I had to get Lucas and get the hell out of here!

Alex growled at me, "Stop moving!"

I would keep fighting until I was free, but he was much stronger than me. He straddled me, keeping me pinned to the ground and clamped one of his hands on my forehead.

"Give me what once was mine, and more," he yelled.

My heart pounded fast as I tried to get him off me. The other two men laughed as they watched. I saw Lucas out of the corner of my eye, pinned to the floor not far from me. A tear ran down my cheek. I would die before I knew him.

"I'm sorry," he muttered. Just like that. He was giving up. He wasn't going to save me.

I felt my time slowly counting down. My seventy years I had left started to leave me and enter him. I watched him as he grew stronger as my years entered him.

I felt the life draining from me. Soon I would be dead and there was nothing we could do about it.
