9. Chapter Nine

Did I hear that right? Was I about to get a second chance? My head was ringing with such questions when I noticed she was still stood there.

She was tall and had an extremely kind face. When I looked into those sea blue eyes I felt calm and collected, like everything was alright. It was like being with Lucas, only this lady looked much more trustworthy than him. She smiled at me. I noticed she wasn't a ghost like me - she wasn't translucent or anything. But she was definitely not a human either. She was sort of a shimmering image, still glowing faintly silver.

"Who are you?" I couldn't help but ask.

"I'm an Angel of the Lord," she informed. "And I'm here to give you one final chance. One final chance to go back to life."

I stared. "Really?"

She nodded. "But it's not going to be simple Ali, let me warn you. I need you to think this through. If you don't want to go back to life, I understand. If you want to proceed to afterlife, you can."

"No!" I said immediately. "I mean, no I don't want to die! I want to go back - to my family, to - to Reid and -" I was about to say Lucas but I caught myself. No, it was not that traitor who mattered to me. It was my family and my best friend.

The Angel looked disconcerted. But nevertheless, she continued to speak. "Ali, you are being given this chance to go back to life because you had to die for no fault of your own. For being able to return to life, you must complete a certain task. But I'm warning you it will be a very difficult one, because returning to life after once having died is unnatural and abnormal. Only few souls get that opportunity, and I advice you to use yours wisely."

She pulled out a scroll and read it. "Ah, I see," she sighed. "This is your task, Ali. The Lord thinks it will be most appropriate for us to test you this way. Come with me," she touched my smoke-like hand and in a blink of an eyelid, we were in a totally different but painfully familiar place.

The riverside.

"Why are we here?"

"For your task," she merely said. "Look behind you Ali."

I turned, and what I saw made my stomach lurch unpleasantly. On one side, in the middle of the river, I saw Reid. A panicked, drowning Reid, his face blistered and his arms and legs tied with long, strong tentacles. He was gasping for breath, and was feebly attempting to call out my name. I felt my heart turn to lead. He was dying.

But on the other side, I saw Lucas. A weak, defeated Lucas pinned to the ground by monstrous beasts. Among them I saw the savage face of Alex. I felt the same sensation in my stomach again. Lucas was dying too. The monsters were ripping him to shreds.

In a heartbeat I realised what the task was. I had to choose. Choose between my best friend Reid, the one who stood up for me all the time, the one who has been there for me since forever and my two-day long infatuation for Lucas, the one who had thought of betraying me to those monsters who were now tearing him apart. The choice should have been simple. But it was not. How could I choose between these two guys? I just could not!

I looked around for the Angel, but she had gone. I was all alone. And I had to save Lucas and Reid. I just stood there, rooted to the spot, not knowing what to do, not knowing whom to help, not knowing how to choose.
