5. Chapter Five

His words hit me hard, popping my imaginary safety bubble and bringing me crashing back to reality. Nothing felt right anymore. A tiny voice in my head kept screaming out for help, but my mouth had gone dry. I couldn't even speak.

I should have known. How could I have trusted this stranger?

I inched away from him, horrified. He looked dangerous in the twilit sky, a shadow creeping over his handsome face, eyes glinting malevolently. I thought this was my end. I was going to die for sure. There was no way out. He had brought me somewhere far off, I couldn't even run. I braced myself for the inevitable death, but the next thing I knew, he was clutching his stomach, laughing madly as though invisible hands were tickling him somehow. He doubled up with wild laughter, and I just stared. What on earth was going on?

"Just ... look at ... your face!" he gasped, laughing uncontrollably. "Oh Ali, you didn't actually believe that, did you?"

I breathed. It felt like an enormous weight had been lifted off my shoulders, and I felt relaxed and relieved again. I switched back into the trance, mentally cursing myself for even believing for a second that such a gorgeous guy could do me any harm. He felt so right. Just so perfect.

"And the reason I brought you here is," he said, still chuckling, "because I wanted to talk to you. You just seem ... very nice, Ali."

By this time I had completely forgotten everything else. He thought I was nice. That was all I could think of, and my heart started doing a mad happy-dance. We talked into the night, gazing at the starlit sky, and the longer I was with him, the more I started trusting him. When he was there, everything felt right. I poured my heart out to him, telling him everything about myself, about my family and my miserable life at home. I kept talking, and talking ... school, friends, best friends ... and he just listened in utmost concentration, laughing and nodding at the right places. It felt like my whole world was at peace.

"Oh, is it that late already?" he said, looking at his wristwatch. "We must leave, Ali. I don't want to keep you here all night."

I didn't want to go. Not to that miserable, lonely place I called 'home'. I just wanted to be with him all night ... or forever. But he insisted on driving me back, saying it was too late to be out. He cared so much. I couldn't help but blush fiercely.

He must have noticed the disappointment on my face because he said, laughing, "Ali, I love spending time with you! If you like, we can meet again tomorrow."

I nodded enthusiastically. I must have looked so desperate, but I didn't care. As long as he was there, everything was fine. I was picturing myself in a beautiful place with Lucas when my Blackberry beeped annoyingly. Reid was texting me.

Ali, where are you? You haven't talked to me for two weeks, is everything all right?

I felt mad at Reid for some reason. Why was he disturbing me? Couldn't he just mind his own business? Frustrated, I texted him back.

Sorry, busy.

I had intentionally kept it short and rude. Now he won't text me again. Now I could spend my valuable time talking to Lucas. That was so much better. But when I looked at him, I found him staring at my Blackberry so intently as though he would make it explode. I was just about to say something to him when Reid texted me again.

You're avoiding me Ali. I'm meeting you tomorrow at 6PM. Please be home.

I exhaled exasperatedly. Why couldn't he just leave me alone? I didn't even bother texting him back this time, but found that Lucas was now glaring at my phone as though it was something very disgusting. I flushed in spite of myself. He must have seen that because he averted him gaze immediately and casually began talking to me again.

"So, tomorrow," he said. "When do you want to meet me? Would 6PM be fine?"

"Uh ... actually," I was thinking about Reid, but seeing the disappointed look on Lucas' face, I caught myself in time. "Yeah, six will be fine."

He smiled, making the hair on the back of my neck stand. Reid would just have to wait. I was going to be with Lucas tomorrow. And it would be perfect.
