30. Princess Lyrae

We are met, five minutes later, with an arrow to Lance's left.

"Blaze, swerve!" I scream to my dragon. If one arrow has almost found it's mark, then others may follow.

It turns out I'm right. Another of the deadly weapons slices through the air, splitting apart the wind where I had just been.

"Lyrae, they're in the huge tree down there!" Nero screams in my ear, and already Blaze is turning, beating his magnificent wings as he turns, his tail lashing out as he curls himself around, and plummets towards the tree. Another arrow flies towards us, but Blaze incinerates it with his flames, and it crumbles to ashes.

A figure swings himself down the tree, using the branches like mere monkey bars.

Nero is flying towards him before I can stop him, slamming into the figure as he throws himself from Blaze's back. My dragon quickly swallows the flames he was about to launch, to avoid slaughtering Nero.

"You did that to Lief! It was you who attacked me, you who almost killed him!" Nero is screaming, his eyes burning like flames of hatred.

He manages to grab hold of a branch, but Korae's soldier lands heavily on the branch below.

"And it was your princess who almost killed Korae! I hate you all! Vermin! Filth!" he screams, as he gets to his feet, narrowly avoiding a knife from Nero.

"Leave this one to me, Lyrae!" Nero begs, and I cannot deny him the pleasure of getting revenge. I hate him, if he did this to Lief, but it was Nero who would be dead if Lief hadn't thrown himself before him. And it's Nero who must avenge the hours we spent here, because of this one man.

Nero's opponent tries to climb up into the tree, to reach Nero, but my lieutenant doesn't let him climb. Every time Korae's filth tries to get higher, Nero kicks at his hands.

I find myself enjoying this match, because Nero is winning. I don't even care that he holds the advantage in height, than it's almost impossible for the other to climb higher. Nero is winning, and that's all that matters.

Then Korae's servant gets one bit too high for Nero, close enough that the dagger in his hand can slice through Nero's foot... But it doesn't.

My lieutenant, seeing every move of the battle as I've known him to do since we first met, slams his boot into the idiot's face, grabs him by the hair, and slings him over the branch he stands on.

"Revenge," Nero mutters, and I cannot help but laugh. If this is all Korae can throw at us, we'll be fine on the way back.

"That's the one she jumped in front of," I say suddenly, only just recognising the face. which means she cares for him...

And he'll make an excellent hostage.
