22. Princess Lyrae

When we stop for the night, Lief's condition is even worse. His breathing is heavy and laboured, his cries filled with even more pain, and growing weaker. As we sit by a fire, leaning against Blaze, Lance checks the map, then gives it to Nero.

"Where are we?" he asks.

"Less than a day's flight from Korae's kingdom," Nero replies. I stay silent as I gaze into the flames. What if my sister attacks? What if she hurts Lief, or Nero, or Lance? What if her whole army show up? Though I would gladly stay behind to protect my men, I cannot stop a whole army. And, thought Blaze would stay too, then my friends would have no horses to leave on. Plus, they'd never actually leave me in the first place. I shudder, imagining Korae's army attacking.

"Lief will be okay, won't he?" Lance asks me. With his face illuminated by the leaping flames, and finally allowing his emotions to show, Lance seems only like a young child, fearing for his brother. He looks so innocent. And yet he, at fifteen years of age, must fight wars.

It's Korae's fault. Why can't she just accept that I'm the better leader? My people would never join her; they've told me so and I don't question it. I don't want her leading my people into a bad era. I couldn't live like that, seeing my own people, who want me on the throne, cast into dark times and made to pay higher taxes, work even harder than they already do, kill themselves working for Korae.

Though I want the land, it's more my people's safety that worries me.

I realise I still haven't answered Lance.

"Yeah," I reply, trying to convince myself of the statement. "Lief's tough; he'll pull through."

As Lance studies my face to see if I am lying, then sets his head back, satisfied, I let the doubt creep onto my expression. If only I could believe my words as easily as Lance does.
