20. Princess Lyrae

After just an hour of flying, I feel exhausted, my chest burning with pain. Nero is constantly asking me how I feel, and, trying to put a cheery tone to my voice, I have to keep telling him that I'm fine. And every time I do, he reminds me that he'll take over if my wound is hurting me too much. Eventually, Lance just tells him to shut up and stop annoying me. Though he says it like he is threatening Nero, and nobody, not even Lance, threatens my Lieutenant, I am grateful for the comment. Nero growls in irritance, but does as Lance tells him, and stops asking me of my condition. The last thing I want is pity. But eventually, when Nero asks me a question, it all sounds so fuzzy. I realise that my sight is blurring as well.

"Wound... Hurting..." I manage, before I start to sway in the saddle. I look down at my chest, to see that the crimson blood is covering my tunic.

"Blaze, land!" Nero's cry echos in my ears, but his words seem strang and alien. I groan in pain, and slump forwards, with Nero screaming orders at Blaze. He says something to me, but I am to weak to even understand the words. The bandage has come loose; my healer did not personally dress it. Then, I vaguely remember an order I once gave, that any of my skilled healers should be focusing on any one of my men before me, and leave me only with a less experienced healer. Well, I think, the world spinning around me, at least I've helped my men by doing this. Lets just hope I haven't killed Lief.

Nero is taking my arms, and lifting me from the saddle, as Lance hastily lays a blanket on the floor. I am vaguely aware of Nero sitting me on the blanket, and taking the healing kit from the saddle-bags. He gives me some sort of blue concoction to drink. It'll boost my energy enough, he says, that I can put the ointment onto my wound, and then he can re-tie my bandages at my back. The medicine gives me enough strength to put the ointment into the wound, and Nero starts re-tying the bandage.

"They made a mess of this," he growls, as Lance steadies me with a firm hand on my shoulder.

When Nero's finished, I let Lance help me to the saddle, despite Nero's protests.

"You're too injured to fly any more!" he insists. Lance answers for me.

"Well, then, we'll just let Lief die, shall we?"

Nero reluctantly joins us on the saddle, though takes the reins. I tell Blaze to fly well for him. It's against his nature to let anyone else fly him, even Nero, but he knows he must. As Blaze beats his wings, I take a deep breath and prepare myself for flight.

We are off again.
