18. Princess Lyrae

My healer insists that I cannot go to find the antidote.

"Your chest!" she says, her eyes sparkling with the fear that I might punish her. "If you go, you'll only make it worse!"

"And if I don't, then Lief will die. Only I can fly Blaze," I tell her. And then, as an afterthought, "Though I thank you for your concern."

"I'll make sure she gets the medicine," Nero adds, returning from packing everything we need. My healer looks at us nervously, and I can see that it's against her nature to agree to this. But she must, and she knows it.

"Just be careful," she begs, and I nod, taking from her a detailed sketch of the plant that might cure Lief. I can only hope desperately that it will. As we bid her farewell, and leave the infirmary with Lief slung over Nero's shoulders, a familiar voice says,

"I'm coming too."

I turn round, and a tiny smile touches my lips as I see Lief's younger brother. Lance.

"It's too dangerous," Nero tells him, as Lief cries out in agony, thrashing and smacking Nero in the back of his head. My Lieutenant doesn't flinch. Lance shakes his head angrily.

"I'm coming, Nero!" he insists, turning to me. "Right, Lyrae? Lief's my brother; I deserve to come! Please! Blaze can carry four; he's big enough! I won't get in your way, trust me!"

His face is pleading. And I know that determined look, from the days spent with Nero and Lief. That look tells me that he doesn't care if he has to cling to Blazes tail, that he will do anything just to get his way. Nero tries to convince him otherwise, but I interupt.

"Let Lance come," I told Nero, as he straps Lief to Blaze's saddle. He gives a low moan of pain, but doesn't thrash.

Nero looks at me quizzically, but does not disobey me. Sighing, he agrees, and Lance smirks.

"Well then," I ask gravely. "You ready to go?"
