At War (Old Version)

*OLD VERSION! :) There's a newer one published now. :D*
Two princesses are fighting a war for their father's throne. Now, they must inherit their father's mighty battle dragons, and end the war, one way or another... But who will win?

14. Princess Lyrae

I wake up in the infirmary, to the sounds of men, screaming in agony, and the stench of stale blood. A healer's face is the first sight I have. She bows, clearly glad I'm awake.

"Blaze?" I ask weakly, trying to sit up.

"My Lady, please, don't injure yourself my moving about too much!" the healer tells me, anxiety on her face. I try to give a reassuring smile, but wince instead, as agony shoots up my entire being.

"The healer's right, Lyrae," Nero's voice beside me says, and I look to my left. Nero is there, with bandages wrapped around his right arm, and a swollen eye.

"I'm fine," he adds, before I have the chance to ask him. "And so's Blaze. Well, he's better than you, in any case. Tekara got the innocents to safety, and we're currently at your stronghold, in the mountains. The battle ended shortly after you blacked out. They took Korae and retreated, but we had to do the same. We've lost men, but not as many as last time," Nero informs me, his good eye filled with what looks like grief.

"What's wrong?" I ask. Nero looks away, unable to hold my gaze.

"I... I'm sorry, Lyrae," he whispers, looking down at his hands. It's the first time I've ever seen him like this- he's so sad, ashamed.

"What is it?" I urge. I know that it hurts him to say, but I need to know. Whatever it is, it's obvious Nero blames himself. He swallows, and, breathing deeply, looks up at me again. His eyes are so full of emotion that I almost want to embrace him, and comfort him as a mother would comfort her child. And finally, using all the strength he can muster, Nero tells me.

"It- It's Lief."
