Forgiving Justice

"...So it came a bit of a shock to me when I saw what was happening between Bella and Theo. No one would have guessed that anything like that could happen to us: the happy go lucky Balmers and Kensits living in the big house on the corner. But that’s the funny thing about life.

4. Not Tonight.

“Hello Jasper.”

Jasper turned to look at me. The affectionate beam that forever covered his face when he saw me was weird, if not completely embarrassing. However I forgot all acknowledgement of the world when Jasper pulled my chin to his, and pressed his lips gently to mine. I gripped Jasper tightly, and pushed his mouth open so I could feel his hot breath…

“Hey… Hey! Natalie, please.”

I sighed irritably, and pulled away. Jasper laughed at my folded arms. “What is it with you, Natalie? Can’t control your teenage desires?”

I humphed.  “Just because one of us doesn’t have a hormone in their body, it doesn’t mean all of us don’t.”

Jasper didn’t say anything. He knew what I wanted. He told me he wanted it, too. But that didn’t stop Jasper from saying no.

He just didn’t give in. Of course there had been times when Jasper had almost crumbled. For the past couple of months I hadn’t slept alone. The nightmares about my past had gotten too bad Jasper had insisted that he slept with me. Of course, we didn’t do anything. All that happened was that I’d have a shower, brush my teeth, get into bed and Jasper would pop out of my cupboard and join me. Nightmares didn’t have a chance with Jasper’s huge arms holding me close.

Jasper had to be very careful when he kissed me though. A goodnight peck on the cheek could quite easily turn into a 24 hour special if I had anything to do with it.

And there was one night when Jasper had almost caved in. Everything was going just as it normally did, until I started pushing.

“Jasper?” I had asked him, mumbling into his chest.

“Yes, my love?” Jasper answered, tracing patterns on my bare arm with the tips of his finger.

“Um… Well…”

Jasper pulled me up to look me straight in the eye. It was as if he could feel something brewing. There was something strange about that boy, there had to be.

“Natalie, what’s wrong?”

This was going to be harder than I had first expected. “Jasper, don’t take this the wrong way, but…”

“Just please tell me, Nat, I’m dying here!”

“Jasper, do you… Do you love me?”

I could feel a low rumble through Jasper’s chest as he laughed at me. “Really, Natalie, of all the stupid questions to ask…”

“Well if you did…”

“Well if I did what?”

I took a deep breath. “Well if you did… You’d show me.”

I melted just a bit when Jasper pulled me closer to his chest and stroked my hair.

“You know why I have to say no, Nat.”

“I don’t.”

Jasper’s hands loosened around my hips and fell to his sides. “You’re only fifteen, love.”

“And you’re only seventeen!”

Jasper put his mouth to my ear. “Exactly! How can I trust myself when you’re just so… so…”

I turned my face away from Jasper, brushing his hand away from my face.

“So what?”

Jasper coughed, uncomfortable. “Anyway… It’s illegal, Natalie. I could be prosecuted. And what if I hurt you? I’d never forgive myself.”

I leant up on my elbows. “You wouldn’t hurt me!”

Jasper shook his head. “I don’t know, Nat.”

I blinked hard, forcing tears out of my eyes. “Please, Jasper. Please, it’s all I want…”

I hated that I was hurting him. I hated that I was playing on his emotions. But I wanted to know that I was just as much to him as he was to me.

With a sudden movement I moved my face back towards Jasper’s, and twisted in his arms until my lips reached his. He grabbed my face too, and I thought he was going to push it away.

I was wrong.

Jasper’s kiss was not the usual, sweet, soft gentle kiss it normally was. This kiss was hard, urgent, and full of desperation and longing. There was a new edge of yearning and desire in the way our lips moved.

Jasper didn’t stop kissing me.

It was me who had to break away, breathless, but even then I didn’t give up. I pulled my arms out of Jasper’s iron grip and grabbed at his collar, forcing his shirt open.

In the next beat I found my arms locked above my neck. Jasper’s mouth was at my ear. “No, Natalie.”

“Why? You said…”

I heard a low rumble again. “I know what I said. Just… Just not now.”

I leant up on my elbows. “What?”

“Not tonight.”

I lay back on the pillow, next to Jasper. “Give me one good reason why tonight isn’t as good as any other night.”

Jasper stroked my face. “When you’re older,” he murmured. “And preferably when we’re married.”

I gave a choked laugh, my heart pumping blood too fast around my body. “M…Married?”

“All right, all right, no need to sound too distressed about the idea.”

“Is that a proposal?”

Jasper stuck his hand in his pocket and fumbled around. My eyes widened in horror. He chuckled at me.

“I’m joking, Natalie. Anyway, I don’t need to propose. Who else would you want to marry except me?”

I closed my eyes. Jasper was right. “True,” I yawned, “Very true, Jasper.”

I felt an arm wrap around my stomach. “Sleep, my love,” Jasper whispered, “You’re tired.”

He started running his fingers up and down my back as I cuddled into his chest snugly. I relaxed and gave into sleep when Jasper started humming a mysterious, magical tune into my ear.

I fell asleep in Jasper’s arms.
