1. The Proposal

"I hope it is something very important to say to wake me up at this hour."

"Jess, he proposed." Lindsey's heart was still pounding on her chest, her smile was still wide and she was literally jumping as she said the words over the phone.

"No kidding. When?" Jessica sounded fully awake now.

"An hour ago. I called you as soon as I got home."

"How did he do it? How did he do it? Tell me everything." Lindsey thought that some of her excitement had transferred itself through the phone line to Jess.

Lindsey pondered over her best friend's question. "We had gone for a movie. After that, I wanted to get home; I need to be up early for a presentation at office. But he insisted on going to the Bakery, said he was dying to have a cake." She paused. She smiled at how Nick had it all planned beforehand, how he had called on his mother to babysit his daughter, how despite her reluctance he had been persistent on going to the Bakery.

"And then, Lin? I am dying to hear." Jessica's question brought her back to her room.

"Then when we got to the Bakery, the manager was all smiles at us. I thought maybe he was having a good day. I should have picked the clue then. Anyways the cake arrived. I noticed the icing, I was about to call the waiter because I was sure he had ordered a plain cake. Then, I took a closer look at it. The icing spelt out 'Marry Me' and like a cherry was the," she stroked the ring on her finger and a long breath escaped her mouth, "most beautiful ring I have ever seen."

"Ooooh, that is so lovely. Way to go, girl. I am so glad for you. So, when's the big day?" "We have not thought about it yet."

"Does Sabrina know?"

"No, Nick has not talked to her yet. Says that I could, maybe you know, spend the weekend with the two of them." A hint of anxiety lingered in her voice.

"So, what's the problem? You know she likes you." "She likes me as her father's colleague. What will she do when she finds out I am engaged to him?"

"Spend the weekend with her so you get close to her. Don’t you worry. She is a nice girl and you are a darling. You two will hit it off real soon."

"I hope so too, Jess. I truly hope so." The two fingers of her right hand crossed with each other as she said these.
