9. Journey Across America Pt. 1

The drive from Phoenix in Arizona to the small town of Pine Bluff in Arkansas is exceptionally long. They all pilled into Derek's old brown chevy station-wagon, the noise of the clutch and gear changes sounded like the whole engine would fall onto the road at any minute. Coupled with the constant fear, Harry and Francis didn't appreciate that their was no air conditioning. The day was going from bad to worse.

They exited Phoenix via route 87 heading north-east. Arizona is a beautiful state and lavishly rewarded with numerous national parks, many of which the trio passed on their way towards their destination. First they passed the McDowell Mountain Regional Park on their left, then a few miles further they were passing the Tonti National Forest on their right.

Harry couldn't help but feel uneasy as they passed redwood after redwood. He looked out of his passenger side window into the wooded area in front of them, he stared into the trees, catching glimpses of humanoid shaped trees. 'Are you in there Slender Man?' Harry thought almost continuously. There wouldn't be much talking, Francis was slightly jet lagged from his trip over from the east coast, so he fell straight to sleep. Conversation with Derek also proved about as interesting, Harry assumed the best thing he could do was keep his mind off of the task that lay before them, think of happier things. Unfortunately Harry was void of such memories at a time like this, and instead enjoyed the scenery, haunting though it might be.

Soon they were passing Sitgreaves National Forest and some time after they were driving down alongside the Petrified Forest National Park, and driving on the legendary route 66. Signs on the roads were begging drives to turn off towards the Nevada Desert and the garish lights of sin city that lay beyond, Las Vegas. Ignoring these signs the threesome barreled down the dusty road that sprawled out before them, mile after mile of Tarmac and roaring heat. The only comforting noise was being made by Francis as he snored, reiterating the fact that he was still alive in the back seat.

They were finally passing through the state of New Mexico and through the city of Albuquerque. The signs for Las Vegas had now subsided as they passed the last turn off towards the gambling city of the world. Harry felt somewhat sad that they wouldn't see another sign post to that place, he had never been to Las Vegas nor had he ever gambled. There was always something about the place that Harry found seedy and untoward, he stayed clear of things like that, but not paranormal entities it seemed, the irony often amused Harry. They were making good time through New Mexico, and before they knew it they were entering the northern most tip of Texas, there time here wouldn't last long, and Harry was very happy with this, the heat was becoming intense, even though the sun was beginning to go down.

It wasn't until they were passing through Elk City in Oklahoma that Francis finally awoke, "Where are we?" He asked rubbing his eyes.

"Oklahoma, you've slept through three states." Harry said with a smile on his face, and a slight note of resentment.

"Jesus, Oklahoma huh?" Francis rose from his slumped position and looked out of the window. "What a shit hole. Hey Derek stop at the next McDonalds, I'm friggen starving."
