18. Dirty Harry

The sun was shining high above their heads, however the forest floor was remarkably damp and bleak, mounds of moss underfoot made walking both a struggle and comforting. There was always something about wandering through nature that Harry loved, and this wood had an aura of familiarity to it. Derek shouted Sally's name and wandered off a few yards in front. Harry raised his head into the trees, his eyes caught a few shafts of blinding light making their way to the moist moss carpet beneath. A few leaves fell and spiraled downwards, while numerous birds flew away from a deeper part of the wood. It was a beautiful place indeed, Harry wished he could live in a place like this.

Despite the constant feeling of dread being surrounded by trees with Slender Man following their every move, Harry remained quite calm; either because he was choosing not to think about it, or because he felt a little stronger with that gun pressed against his hip. He hoped over a fallen tree and took a seat on a mossy patch, his back leaning against the now dead conifer. He scanned the area for signs of disturbance, his police training kicking in. He had been looking the entire time he arrived in the woods, broken twigs, misshapen branches, footsteps, but so far nothing jumped out at him. He could sense when something felt out of place, but the only thing that felt wrong was Derek's story.

At this point Harry's designer clothes had become muddy beyond repair, he cursed, wishing he had packed more casual clothing, if he owned any. Still laying against the log Harry leant his head back, resting it on the tree. The woods were quiet, the birds had stopped their songs when they all flew away from the deeper area of the wood. All that Harry could hear now was the chilling reminder that he was alone here, Derek had wandered off, even his shouts had evaporated away. Far in the distance, behind all the thin tall trees a wall of white was slowly rising from the mossy floor. Fog. Mist. A sight to send chills down the heart of a normal man, but with Harry, it sent daggers.

Harry stared out into the woods, sweat now gathering on his brow, his heart rate quickening, his breathing becoming erratic. He knew what was coming, he knew the signs, he felt his presence. From behind him a snap, broken twigs signaled a foreign body moving closer to Harry. Another crunch of broken leaves underfoot caused Harry to grab the revolver from his pants, he held it tight to his chest with both hands. He could hear the beasts breathing, and then. Snap! Harry grabbed his gun and span on the spot, finger on the trigger ready to take down whatever stood in his path. "I'll kill you!" He screamed.

"Woah fuck!" Francis yelled, parrying the gun out of his face and dropping to his knees, the gun discharged and a bullet spiraled into the heart of a nearby tree. "Harry what the hell? Why you trying to kill me? Where'd you get the bloody gun from?" Francis' eyes were wide with terror.

"I... I thought you were Slender Man..." Harry replied weakly, his heart still trying to escape his chest. "The gun isn't mine. I found it Derek's car."

"You're a son-of-a-bitch! Slender Man? God dammit Harry pull yourself together!" Francis got back to his feet and rubbed some mulch off his knees. "Derek had a gun? What a nut. Anyway I spoke to the friends parents and it's true, Derek has a daughter called Sally and she does live with him."

"So at least we know he's not a liar." Harry felt relieved a little that this wasn't some hoax. "Have you seen him?"

"Who Derek? Yeah I thought I saw him come this way, that's who I was looking for before you pointed that bloody gun in my face!"

After more arguing and tussling Harry and Francis decided to go further into the woods in search for Sally, and now Derek. Ultimately, they would find far more.
