Slender Man

A story based around the true tales and actual records of a paranormal entity that has plagued our world since time began. We follow Harry Cobain, a researcher into this phenomenon as he makes a big speach about the entity at a conference. But he does not know that a man sits in the audience, and will change his life, showing him the true face of Slender Man. WARNING: contains descriptions of actual crimes which include the killing of small children. Read with caution.

3. Children of 1986

"It's not fully understood what Slender Man wants, if anything at all, or why he attacks those he does. Alarmingly it is the weakest amongst us that feel his wrath. Our precious children." Harry pressed his button again, showing on the screen behind him another image, a black and white photo of children playing.

"This photo was taken in 1986 by one Mary Thomas. However on June 13th of that same year Mary Thomas was declared a missing person and has never since been found. In the foreground you see a child on the right siting on a slide. On the left a couple of children are waiting patiently for their turn. Now look at the back, between the trees, we can clearly see a number of other children sitting down and standing around a man. A tall man, possibly 7ft. But look at his arms." Harry pressed his button again, bringing up a close up version of the same photo, showing the person clearly on screen.

"How many arms do you see? Four? Five? Now look at the shape." Some members of the crowd openly gasped as it became visible that they were looking at something truly frightening. "They look like tree branches, but he's not touching the children, merely watching, always watching. He has no discernible facial features either, just blank. A few days later fourteen of the children that you see here in this picture went missing, they were never seen again. This photo was recovered from a fire at the Stirling City Library in California. Along with another but I was unable to get a hold of that picture. Fourteen children, gone. No evidence, no links between them, nothing." Harry paused for effect, looking on into the wavering crowd. A couple were sitting near the middle sobbing, parents to one of the children that Slender Man took away. They had come seeking answers, they will leave disappointed.

"This is tame however for Slender Man. He is not an opportunist, he stalks his prey. There was a case in 2007 about a group of friends that went into the woods to film a documentary for a school project. They did not know but they had been followed all their lives by the creature known as Slender Man. Their bodies were discovered days later by park rangers, what they found was nothing short of barbaric. Seven teenagers in all were found in a circle around a tree, their chests ripped open and their organs hanging in plastic bags from the trees above. This act of bagging blood and organs of his older victims is seen time and time again. No evidence was ever found, no suspects were ever questioned, there was nothing but death. I should know, I worked the case.

"He is also cruel in his methods, sometimes not laying a finger on his victims, merely showing presence is enough, sometimes making them do things that they don't want to do, like murder or suicide. There is documented evidence of people who have come into contact with Slender Man, and are driven insane with paranoia. Sometimes you don't have to even see him to feel this anxiety. Just by seeing pictures of him, hearing his tales of even imagining the evil creature is enough to drive some people insane.

"So could this be our answer? Could Slender Man just be figments of our imagination? An entity that we've created ourselves that is the personification of fear? Possibly. Would that explain the deaths and missing children over the countless centuries? Certainly not."
