"I was never good at making friends and when Scarlet, the most popular girl even back then, said that we could be friends, I knew I would do anything. Back then I didn't know what anything meant. I followed her everywhere and did everything she said, and finally I was invited to a sleepover at her house.

At the sleepover, Scarlet introduced me to her friends and they seemed to like me. But then, when Scarlet's mum left to get ice cream for us, Scarlet hit me. I went to the floor, crying as I clutched my face. Then the other girls joined in. They pulled and cut my hair, they pinched and scratched me. Every time I shouted or started to cry Scarlet would kick me, or hit me harder, she taught me to be quite. The quieter I was the less they would hurt me and the quicker they would be. When they stopped, Scarlet brought me a towel and some ice. She told me that she did that to stop me from being different and when they had finished helping me, we could be friends." I breathed in deeply. I told her everything, well, apart from the fact that I also wet myself because of how scared and young I was.

"So I waited and endured the punishments so we could become friends. When we got to year 5 at school I thought that I could just leave... but they wouldn't let me. Things got more aggressive. They started to use knives and other things. They only hurt me in certain places now, so no one can see my differences. That's why I'm scared." I paused again, trembling, my  words were full of sobs and I could feel the tears roll down my face, leaving a watery trail.

"I'm moving away with my mum, I hoped that I could get away, but - I - but Scarlet found out I was moving..." My chest puffed in and out, I didn't realize that I was having trouble breathing. I gasped for more air, feeling like I'd just run a marathon: My muscles ached, my heart pounded and I couldn't breathe!  My throat felt dry but my cheeks were drenched. I finally wheezed out a sentence.

"She said that if I moved... she'd kill me."
