2. Discovered

I know that what Scarlet said was true. If I move, I die. But where would I live? I have no other family. Who could I tell? No one. I couldn't tell anyone, no one understands. I deserve to be punished. I'm different.

I had to move. I had to live with my mother. Even though she's always gone, I love her. What could I do? I could lie to Scarlet. I could tell her I was staying, then move away for good. But Scarlet isn't stupid. She'd know if I was lying and would find out easily. What should I do?

Today's Monday, so whatever I decide to do would have to be decided now. I was sitting in English, listening to my teacher drone on about literature and the concepts of Shakespeare. I was wearing my thick, black uniform jumper to cover up the cuts and bruises along my arms, which I had received the other day. I stood out among the other pupils in the class, as I was the only one wearing a jumper in the 25°C Summer weather.

Next lesson was PE. I had never done PE because it would show my scars, as we are required to wear T Shirts. This year, we had a new PE teacher. She had deep red hair and a runner's body. Her face seems to never change from the expression of anger. I assumed the whistle round her neck wasn't just for sports.

Everyone began to change for PE as I stood still, again standing out from the crowd. The red headed teacher burst through the changing room door and glared at me. Her long finger pointed at me, then beckoned me outside. I followed her out of the room. She lent against the wall casually as I stood awkwardly in front of her. The PE teacher took one last glance at me then spoke.

"Why aren't you doing PE?" Her voice was as rough as the brick wall she was leaning against. At first, what she asked stunned me, no teacher had ever asked why I wasn't doing PE, they simply gave me a detention. I stared back at her silently.

"Are you aware that PE is a mandatory lesson?" I stared at her, once again, giving no reply. She sighed, fed up of battling with me when she'd barely put up an argument.

"Take off your jumper and you can help me set out the equipment." I shook my head ferociously. She glared quizzically at me, confused, slightly taken back that I could react.

"Why do you not want to take your jumper off?" I pulled my sleeves down further, so my hands were inside my jumper. The red headed teacher grabbed my wrist and pulled up my sleeves. And just like that, 12 years of a secret has been discovered.
