29. Too late

The glass door creaked open slowly as Damen walked it. He was drenched head to foot but he didn’t blink and the smirk was never smudged from his lips.

I clutched onto Liam and his knuckles turned white as he clutched onto the baseball bat. Harry was standing in front of me and his hands were clenched tightly.

The way he stared at me made me shake. His eyes bore into mine and I could tell that he wanted to hurt me. It had taken him two years to find me again, and his anger had only grown. I had disobeyed him and run away. He said he would come after me if I ran away. I thought the stabbing was enough, but he wanted to kill me now.

I don’t know what he would do to the boys. Would he kill them too? I tightened my grip on Liam. I wouldn’t be able to live without Liam.

Niall and Zayn stepped closer towards to group and they formed a barrier around me. Damen only laughed quietly as his hungry eyes swept up and down me. It sent chills down my spine whenever he looked at me like that.

He casually walked closer as the storm continued to rage on outside. There was continuous thunder claps and lightning flashing that made me jump. He stopped about ten feet away and put his hands behind his back.

“I’m going to take Ally.” He stated, cocking his head to the side as if saying ‘and there’s nothing you can do about it’.

“Like hell you will!” Harry yelled and ran at Damen.

Damen pulled his hands in front of him and I saw a glint of metal.

“HARRY, STOP!” I screamed and Harry froze. Damen raised the knife in his right hand and slowly takes another step forward.

I felt immobilized as I saw him walk towards us. That was the knife- that was the same exact knife that he used to stab me. I could recognize that specific knife anywhere.

Damen really was going to kill us.

“I’m going to say this again- I’m going to take Ally, and you’re not going to stop me.”

“Run!” Louis whispered in my ear, but I couldn’t move. I felt like my whole body was shut down in fear. I didn’t want to die. I didn’t want anyone to die. I just wanted this to be over.

“For God’s sake, run Ally!” Louis repeated louder and I snapped out of my trance. Adrenaline pumped through me as I spun around and sprinted out of the room. I slipped on the tile as I tried to turn quickly into the kitchen and I scrambled as I hurried to stand up.

I could hear Damen yelling something and here was a shuffle. I stood up and snatched my mobile off of the counter, running full sprint to the pantry.

I ran inside and closed the door behind me. With one hand on the doorknob I dialed 999 and held the mobile to my ear with a shaky hand.

The operator answered immediately. “Emergency- what service do you require?”

“Hello, um I need the police immediately. Someone is here to get me and he has a knife and I think he’s going to kill us.” I cried quietly into the receiver.

“It’s going to be okay, ma’am. I’ve notified police task forces; what is your address?”

“Uh it’s 39 Clifton Crescent. Please hurry!” I whispered as my whole body shook. It was silent outside the door.  What was happening? I wanted to look outside to see if everyone was okay, but I was terrified that Damen would find me.

“I’m sending officers now. Don’t panic, ma’am.”

“I think something happened- I, I can’t hear anything!” I tried to contain my sobs and breathe quietly. I was going to die. And if I didn’t I knew someone was. Damen was that kind of person; when he wanted something done, he did it. If he didn’t, he did the next best thing.

So the question was- if he didn’t kill me, who would he kill?

“The police are on their way ma’am. Just stay where you are and they’ll arrive shortly.” She reassured me but I shook my head.

“They need to be here now-” The door swung open and I screamed loudly, dropping the phone on the floor.

Damen stood there, angrily looking down on me. “Who were you talking to?! Huh? Who was it?!”

He grabbed my hair and pulled me up. I whimpered as pushed me against the wall and leaned in closely. “If you try to run, I will KILL you! Got that?!” He raised the knife to my eye level to warn me and I felt like throwing up.

The knife was dripping in blood.

“Damen,” I cried. “Who did you kill?” I screamed. What if it was Liam? Or Harry? If he killed any of my boys… I felt sick. More memories rushed in and I remembered when he slid the knife down my neck. Damen killed someone. He killed someone I loved. He had proved his point and he was still going to take me.

Damen laughed and waved the knife around. “One of the brown haired lads. Yeah, he came running at me when I went looking for you. He’s a brave one, I’ll give you that.” He chuckled as he remembered it.

His face hardened and he looked me straight in the eyes. “I stabbed him in the chest and watched him bleed. And now, you’re going to go see it too.”

Damen spun me around and wrapped an arm around my torso, pushing me out of the kitchen. He swung the knife loosely at his side as he marched us out into the hallway that was right in front of the door.

I looked to the ground, but Damen grabbed my chin roughly and twisted my face so I could see who he had stabbed.

A sob escaped my throat as I saw Harry crouching besides Liam. His white shirt was stained red and he wasn’t moving.

“NO!” I screamed and struggled to get out of Damen’s grip. “NO! PLEASE, NO! NOT LIAM! PLEASE, NOT LIAM!”

Damen kept his grip around me and I fell limp, defeated. If Liam wasn’t alive, I didn’t want to be. Damen could kill me. I didn’t care anymore. All I wanted was Liam, and he wasn’t here anymore. If I died, I could see him again. I needed to die.

Harry and Louis stood up, tears falling down both of their faces. Zayn and Niall were shaking as they kneeled over Liam’s lifeless body. Niall was screaming at Liam to wake up and Zayn was giving him CPR. Both of their hands were covered in the scarlet blood.

I stared down at his beautiful face as his eyes stared blankly at the ceiling. His mouth hung open in shock. This was my fault. He was trying to protect me. I shouldn’t have run. If I let Damen kill me in that alleyway, Liam would still be alive.

Harry stepped forward menacingly, brushing the tears away and leaving a red smudge on his cheeks. “I swear on everything I have- I’m going to get you Damen. I’m going to kill you.”

Damen chuckled. “Well, why don’t you rethink that?” He moved the knife up to my throat and I cried harder. I was going to die. He slowly started backing up towards the front door.

“You’re going to let us go, or I’ll slit Ally’s throat. You know I’ll do it.” Damen taunted him and Harry froze. He looked so torn between what to do.

Harry took a step back with shame written clearly over his face.

“Harry,” I whispered through my tears. My voice escalated into a scream. “Harry, please! Don’t let him take me!”

He shook and Louis placed a hand on his shoulder. Harry shot Damen a deadly glare, his mouth jammed into a hard line. “I will find you, Ally! No matter what- I will bring you home!”

Damen laughed and kicked the door open, pulling us both out into the rain.

“If I don’t kill you first.” He sang creepily into my ear and continued to take me away from the house. Liam was dead. I was taken. Hope was lost.

I gave up struggling against him and let him take me into the forest that was next to the large field. I’d been here so many times when I was younger, but never under as sinister terms as this. And I knew that I might never come out of these woods again.

With the knife still pressed to my throat I continued to cry. It seemed like the only thing I could control right now was my emotions. Liam was dead and I could do nothing. Damen took me, and I could do nothing. Fate was against me in the worst way.

We were deep into the woods and it felt like daggers in my heart when I heard the familiar ring of sirens over the storm. It was too late.
