25. Party!

I stepped forward, shocked speechless. I knew it was my birthday- how could I forget? But I wasn’t going to make a big fuss about it; I was just expecting Harry to give me a cake, card and kiss on the cheek as he did every year. It was an unspoken tradition between the two of us.

So as I stood in the back garden, surrounded by a small group of people, I can honestly say that I am genuinely surprised.

“You didn’t think that we were going to let this birthday go by without a part, did you?” Harry walked forward and pulled me into a hug. “It’s your eighteenth!”

“You can drink with us now!” Niall cheered, causing everyone to laugh.

I gave Zayn, Niall and Louis hug, thanking them all for the party. How long had it taken them to do this? They obviously set it up while I was asleep.

“Happy b-day, Lexi!” El rushed forward and almost tackled me to the ground.

“Thanks!” I laughed and turned to Danielle. She looked sad and withdrawn, but she was putting on a smile.

“Hi,” I smiled weakly, feeling horrible about what happened earlier. I gave her a hug, hoping that our friendship wasn’t ruined. “I’m so sorry, Dani.”

She waved me off. “Don’t worry. The relationship had run its course. It was only a matter of time.”

I gave her one last squeeze before looking over the crowd of unfamiliar faces. Besides the boys, El and Dani, I didn’t know anyone. Well, I did recognize them from campus, some were familiar faces, but I had no idea what their names were. I saw Liam looming in the back, and when I caught his eye he turned away.

What was going to happen between us? I liked him a lot, and I would hate to have another relationship ruined.

“Let us eat cake!” Harry cheered a few feet away, raising his hands triumphantly. In one hand he had a knife, and in another he had a lighter. Oh, no. He wasn’t, was he? Please say he wasn’t going to.

Much to my dismay, he lit the eighteen candles on the large cake and started singing slowly. A small smirk played on his lips as everyone joined in. He knew how much I hated the Birthday Song. But that was only because I knew how Harry liked to end it.

“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you!

Happy birthday, dear Ally!

Happy birthday to you!”

I stepped back, trying to get as far away from him as possible. He was smiling goofily as he shoved his hand in the cake and grabbed a big chunk. He crept towards me agonizingly slow and they all formed a clear path from Harry to me.

I groaned silently. There was no way to avoid this. Darn harry and his evil tradition. I scrunched up my eyes and held my breath, bracing myself.

After a few seconds, nothing happened and I opened one eye. Harry was standing in front of me, the cake in his hand dangerously close.

“Harry-” I warned him, only to be cut off by a handful of cake being shoved in my face.

"Whoo!" He cheered and I wiped the cake from my face. Vanilla.

El walked up to me and handed me a napkin, which I took gratefully. We walked over to the table where everyone was waiting for food.

I stayed near the back and let other, namely Niall, take the first pieces. Liam silently came up behind me. My breath caught as he brushed his hand against mine, sending a deep blush creeping up my neck.

I didn't say anything to him. The quietness between us was pleasant, and I wanted to keep it that way. And even if I was to say something, I would know how to ever put my feelings into the correct words.

We shuffle forward, the lines growing smaller by the seconds. Everyone was relaxing around the pool, eating their cake and talking to friends.

I grabbed a plate and fork from Harry and ventured over to the empty back corner of the garden. There was another reason I didn't like parties- I wasn't one for crowds. It was too dangerous and risky; I was too exposed.

I felt safer in the back corner, looking over the others. Harry was relentlessly flirting with random girls, Niall and Zayn were staying close to the cake, and Louis was talking with El and Dani, his arms secure around his girlfriends waist.

And Liam was slowly walking towards me.

"I'm sorry, Ally." He carefully sat down next to me. "I really am."

I shook my head and smiled. "You don't need to apologize. The kiss just caught me off guard."

He looks at me sideways, his eyebrows raised slightly. "So you're really okay?"

I was about to open my mouth to answer when Harry called me.

"Ally, dearest! You are needed!"

I sighed and gave an apologetic smile to Liam before getting up. I walked over to my cousin, slightly annoyed. Couldn't he see that I was talking to Liam?!

"What is it that you want?" I ask him.

He puts on his widest grin, making it completely obvious that he wanted something. "We want to take a picture- to remember this fine day!"

He called everyone over, telling them the plan. We were to all stand in front of the pool in a line and give our silliest faces.

Then, being the smart students we were, we realized that we needed someone to take the picture, thus excluding them.

"I'll do it." Liam offered raising his hand above the crowd. Harry shrugged and handed him his phone to take the picture with.

"Liam-" I protested, but he smiled reassuringly.

I was pulled into the middle of the line by Harry and reluctantly pulled a face when Liam said go. There were some laughs as the phone was passed around and everyone saw each others faces.

At the end, the phone was handed to me and I smiled down at the screen. By the looks of it, Zayn had refused to pull a face, instead simply sticking his tongue out. Niall was making a duck face and flipping the camera off, and Harry was on Lou's back, both of them contorting their faces.

I place the phone on the table and turn to face them, crossing my arms.

"LET'S GO SWIMMING!" Harry yelled and jumped in the pool fully clothed. A laugh bubbled out of my lips as everyone else followed his lead and leaped in.

I stayed where I was. I could never bear to swim- too risky. To my surprise, Liam had stayed out of the pool with me. He was standing by the edge, staring at me.

I walked over to him, a plan forming in my mind.

"Go on, Liam. Have fun with your friends."

Liam shook his head, his brilliant golden eyes never leaving mine. "I won't if you don't."

"You're being ridiculous, Liam."

"Nope." He crossed him arms, copying me.

"Alright." I shrugged, pretending to give up. I turned slightly to look like I was leaving, but quickly spun back around. Without any warning, I shoved Liam into the pool.

"Ally!" He called after he resurfaced.

I covered my mouth to stop laughing. "Sorry!"

"It's alright." He shook his head and muttered something to himself as he swam over to the pools edge. "Give me a hand, will ya?"

I nodded, leaning over to grab his outstretched hand. There was a glint of something in his eye as he reached closer, and at the last moment I realized my mistake.

Liam grabbed my hand tightly and pulled my into the pool, a scream escaping my lips as I fell towards the water.

Fully submerged, I began to panic. Someone was going to see. They were going to see. They were going to ask questions. I just wanted to stay underwater forever and never come up.

I reached up and felt my exposed scar as my hair floated around me. Why did this have to happen? And on all days- my birthday!

Before I could go through with my plan of staying underwater forever, Liam swam forward and pulled me up.

Everyone was silent as they looked at us. Oh, god.

"Ally are you okay?" Harry asked, his face filled with concern. I nodded and he turned to Liam. "She doesn't like to swim, you twat."

Everyone turned back to their own conversations and I realized why they had been staring. It wasn't because of my scar. Had they even seen it? And even if they had, they didn't say anything!

Did anyone even care? Had I been sheltering myself from nothing after all this time?

I looked around and not a single person was looking at me. My scar was showing, and I was okay.

A wave of happiness and relief washed over me as I pushed my hair out of my face, making my scar even more visible. But I didn't care.

I had a new freedom about me. I felt like I could do anything. Hand me a problem and I could solve it.

I turned to Liam and he swam towards me, a glint of dedication in his eyes also.

He was less than a foot away from me, my breath picking up. This was it.

"I like you, Ally." He managed to say.

"I like you, too, Liam."

And with that, Liam leaned closer and kissed me.

I didn't think about Damen or even how Harry would react later.

All I thought of was Liam, and how perfect this moment was.
