4. The Morning After

I woke up the next day and struggled to remember what the hell had happened last night. My head was hurting and the sun was shining directly into my eye line. "JUNE! GET IN HERE NOW!" Angie shouted as I rolled out of bed and plodded my way into the dining hall, where she was sat on-top of a very tall brunette boy I had not seen before.

The dining hall itself was the biggest room in the whole building, and took up a whole floor. It was furnished with heavy wooden table that were covered in the carvings and graffiti of generations of shadows. One of which Angie was pinning the boy down onto.

"Was this little toe-rag the one who jeopardised your job yesterday?" Angie asked me in a dangerously sweet voice, holding up a photo of the son of the Risington family. I looked at the photo and nodded silently. "Thanks sweetie, that's all I needed to know." she growled, pulling on the hair of her hostage and stretching his leg upwards. He grunted with discomfort, and tried to move. "June, meet July. He's the little bastard who ruined the job."

Roughly 10 minutes later, Angie was pinning July against the wall as my foot got acquainted with his chest. "You absolute" I began "Complete and utter" he was taking my hits well. "Asshole!" Angie let go of him and he collapsed to the floor. I looked down on him and scowled.

"So this is what being a Shadow is like?" he muttered to Angie as she pulled him up to his feet; "No, this is what making June mad is like." she replied to him as he took a seat on the bench in front of me. He the shrugged and smiled in a frustratingly handsome way. "Still beats having a different Up after your body every day."

I stared at him after he made this remark. I figured he was older than me because of the height difference, but to have worked in two trades was still remarkable for an innocent. "July was an underage at the whore house I came from June. He's 16 now" Angie explained, rubbing the boy’s shoulders firmly and grinning like a proud lioness. I didn't bother asking questions. Whenever I did, Angie would just answer them extremely graphically and give me nightmares for a week.

"I have an idea!" she announced after and few minutes of silence that seemed like an eternity. "Since you're so ignorant about proper conduct July, June will be your tutor in how to be a shadow!" We both scowled at her as she finished.

"Put it this was June; you don't do this, I'll kill you." she explained to me, before turning to July and whispering something in his ear that made him blush a violent red. I nodded reluctantly, and grabbed hold of July, pulling him into the courtyard to give him his first lesson.
