2. Rivets

Most ships hull is welded, which is quite easy, but Titanic's builders wanted to use rivets. Rivets are extremely strong when they are steel or strong iron, but they cost so much, that substandard iron had to do. The rivets wouldn't survive a bump or scratch without popping out of the hull.
