Tell Her

Tell Her is a novel written from the point of view of a lovable, ditsy lady-charmer; Danny who is impossibly in love with his best friend Ruby. Only her being his friend isn't the only obstacle he has to overcome...

5. The confession...

Sobriety brought much regret, especially when Roo came to confront me that same day.

“You love me?” Ruby repeated my words, willing some kind of explanation from me.

I couldn’t speak, it was as though someone was gripping my voice box and preventing me from talking. But she stared at me, waiting patiently for me to say something.

“Danny?” She tried again, this time her voice hitched a few octaves higher than normal. “Please tell me you’re joking?”

“I’m not joking.” I managed to mumble almost offended by her question.

“Then why, why are you choosing to tell me this now?! Now that I’m engaged?! Now that I’m happy?! If you ‘loved’ me then you’d want me to be happy.”

“I do want you to be happy, which is why I’m telling you because I know that you could be happier with me.”

“How could I?” She asked harshly, she crossed her arms across her chest and stared at me. “How could I possibly be happier than I am with Brett?”

It felt as though the wind had been knocked out of me, suddenly I felt small, so small in fact that I wanted to scurry off and never have to face this horrible, awkward situation that I’d got myself into. “By being with me.” I stated simply. Surely that was obvious.

“I love Brett,” Ruby stated, her words cut me like a knife and I found myself retracting, moving backwards, “Not you.” She snapped.

Suffice to say this was not the reaction I was hoping for.
