Tell Her

Tell Her is a novel written from the point of view of a lovable, ditsy lady-charmer; Danny who is impossibly in love with his best friend Ruby. Only her being his friend isn't the only obstacle he has to overcome...

4. Back to him...

I picked at the label on my bottle of lager and sighed inwardly, tonight I would get hammered and try to forget that entire ordeal – I was never one for meaningless sex and so when my blind date, Shell, tried to tempt me, I ‘politely’ declined the offer and waved her off in a taxi. Well, that’s the version of the story I’d like to remember. In reality I squealed when she pounced, she questioned my sexuality, tried her luck again and flipped me the finger on her way into her taxi. Suffice to say I won’t be seeing her again.

But being drunk would help me to forget what a mess my head was. And all because I stupidly let myself fall in love with the unobtainable.

But dozens of bottles of Carlsberg later and I just felt worse.

What if’s began chiselling away at my resolve and I started thinking about if she felt the same and we were both just too proud, too stubborn to say anything. Or if she just hadn’t thought about us that way yet... What if what I wanted wasn’t so far fetched after all?

I kept that thought in mind in the taxi to her flat, what if, I’d set myself up for failure before I’d even tried. And yes, she had a boyfriend she was perfectly happy with and yes, I’ve known her all my life but why should those be reasons for me to keep this to myself?

Overwhelmed with misplaced courage and feeling unbreakable, I knocked loud and hard on her front door. And there she was, a vision of absolute perfection, standing so close and yet feeling so far away.

“Hey Dan,” She breathed squinting into the darkness, “It’s late, is something wrong?”

I nodded firmly and closed the distance between us, “Yeah.” I breathed before placing a long anticipated kiss on her soft lips, for a millisecond she kissed me back and then, sadly, she placed her hands on my chest and pushed me away.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” She snapped, furrowing her brow in anger.

“Ruby, I’m in love with you.”

“You’re drunk, oh for god’s sake Danny.” She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms across her chest.

“Yeah, I know, it doesn’t alter the fact that I love you.” I promised.

She stared at me for a few seconds and I waited with baited breath, she searched my face for signs of insincerity and then shook her head, “Leave.”

“I’m not leaving till-“

“Danny, just fucking go.”
