I was crossing the road when it happened; the moment my whole life changed.
There's nothing special about the road. I had been over it countless times in my life without any trouble because it was always so deserted. It was very rare that a car drove along it, and much more rarer that it speeded.
Which is why I can't understand how I didn't see it coming.
It was sleek black; the sun reflecting off it so brightly that I was momentarily blinded. Maybe that's why I stopped in the middle of the road with a car speeding towards me.
Either way, by the time i'd consided moving, it was too late.
I clamped by eyes shut and threw my hands over my head, hoping some way that it might soften the impact, which I know is stupid. I'll be lucky to make it out alive.
Suddenly something slammed into my side. I felt my breath instantly knocked out of me. Momentarily winded, I couldn't really grasp what was happening to me. All I knew was that someone had saved me; for some reason, I was alive.
I tumbled onto the pavement, my leg connecting painfully with the hard concrete. I rolled over gasping, both in pain and for breath.
I tried to sit up but found I didn't have the strength. Wincing, I lay there, waiting for my vision to stop being hazy.
But before I knew it, I felt hands on my shoulders, pulling me up into a sitting position.
I blinked in confusion at the person in front of me. They were a boy with sandy hair and shocking green eyes. But I was too busy focusing on the look in them than the colour; they burned with anger.
"What the hell was that about Amelia?!? Do you have a death wish or something?! You could have used your powers on them!"
I raised my eyebrows. Who was this person? I'm pretty sure i'd never met him in my life.
Wait what did he say?
"Powers?" I asked.
He stared at me for a moment. He seemed a little confused himself, but he still hadn't lost the angry look in his eyes.
"Yes Amelia, your powers. You should have used them instead of being nice and letting them almost kill you!"
I stared at him blankly, and then before I could stop myself, I let out a laugh.
First he looked shocked, but then total rage took over.
"Do not laugh at me! This is not a funny thing, you could have died!"
"Look, I think you must have the wrong person. My names Jenny." I pushed his hands off my shoulders then reached one of my own hands to my face to pinch the bridge of my nose; my vision was fuzzy again and my head was throbbing.
He looked like he was going to say something, he even opened his mouth, but then he simply closed it, looking dazed.
It was then that I noticed the paramedic rushing over from the ambulance that had just pulled up.
"Are you two alright? Anything broken?"
I looked up and winced. "My head hurts, but thats about it."
The boy merely shook his head.
The paramedic breathed a sigh of relief. "Right, well in that case, all you have to do is step into the ambulance so I can check you over and then you can be on your way."
Twenty minutes later I found myself outside my house. The ambulance was just driving away after dropping me off; oh yeah and the boy had gotton off with me.
I sneaked a glance at him. He hadn't said a single word since I told him my name was Jenny.
I cleared my throat. "So do you, uh, live near here?"
He looked at me sharply. He seemed both concerned and wary, like he was worried about me but didn't trust me.
"Amelia is this some sort of a joke?"
I frowned and shook my head. "Look I already told you. My names Jenny. I have no idea who this Amelia is."
He ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. He seemed in shock.
"Okay, Jenny." He said my name like it was strange coming out of his mouth. "Do you know who I am?"
Again I shook my head. "No sorry. Have we ever met?"
"Yes!" he exclaimed.
I took a step back. "Well i'm sorry but I dont remember. What's your name?"
"Tom." He said shortly.
"Well, Tom." I said awkwardly. "Thanks for today. You, um, literally saved my life."
"Anytime." He said in the same short voice.
I swallowed and bit my lip. "Well I better be going."
He nodded slowly.
I blinked once then turned to go, but before I could move he reached out and caught my arm, turning me back to him.
"Do you really not remember anything?"
"I don't know you. Please let go." I breathed the words.
Just like that he let go. Without hesitating, I turned and practically ran to my front door. After a moment fumbling with the keys, I opened the door and let myself into my house.
I flinched when the door slammed shut.
Why had Amelia just let herself into an unknown house? A better question would be what was wrong with her?
I ran my fingers through my hair again.
This was all so messed up. I had finally found her after months of looking and suddenly she didn't remember anything! It was strange. And why was she holed up in a human home? Anyone could see she wasn't normal.
Sighing, I lowered myself down so I was sitting on the pavement.
I wouldn't leave until she came to talk to me.
I wouldn't leave until she remembered.
