1. The Sphinx

"I am NOT going!" i kept saying to my mother, "Museums are boring!" "This one won't be, i promise you," my mother said, "Anyway there is an Egyptian exhibit, and i know you love Egyptian stuff! It was true, i did love Egyptian stuff, so i decided to go along and give it a try.

When we got there i went strait to the Egyptian wing. I was amazed by all the Egyptian things. There was so much Egyptian stuff, from mummies and pyramids, to different kinds of statues, that right away i was glad i had come along. But what caught my eye first was a sphinx. I ran over and looked at the tag. It read:                                                                                              "Sphinxes are a mixture of a lion and a Pharao - an Egyptian king. The head is that of a Pharao and the body is that of a lion. The best known sphinx is "The Great Sphinx of Giza, Egypt. It is a limestone statue of a reclining or couching sphinx, (a mythical creature), that stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile... "what goes on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon and three legs in the evening?" said a deep voice. I looked around.  "Who said that?", i asked. It was only me who was in the Egyptian wing, so no-one could have said it.  "What goes on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon and three legs in the evening?"  "I don't know", i said wearily, "who is it?" "Answer my question," the voice said, "and i shall answer yours." "What goes on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon and three legs in the evening?" , the voice said again. I looked up. I gasped. The sphinx was the one who was speaking! I answered the question very quietly: "I dont know, sphinx, what is it?" "Ahh, you give up?" "Yes," i said. The sphinx answered with a slight laugh, as though he found it quite funny: "A baby in the morning (crawling), a man at noon, (walking), and an old man in the evening, (with a cane). I giggled a bit. "That's a good one, sphinx!" "Darling", i heard my mother calling, "time to go!" "Coming", i called back, "goodbye, sphinx." But the sphinx had already gone back to it's stone position, as though it hadn't said a word. I ran back to my mother.                                                                                     But i never said a word to anyone about that talk with the sphinx. It was a secret.
