8. Trial and Tribulation

'Name: Mr. D. Sotheby

Occupation: Retired

Residence: 29 Gatsby Court

Status:... '

Beth paused. Why did these forms always ask the most awkward questions? Did Beth know whether Mr. Sotheby wanted to buy double glazing? Of course not: the man was insane! He did say that if she came back today, he might be interested, yet he might just want her to come back in order for him to torment Beth even more. Beth feared her mental well being was at risk. She wasn't sure whether Max would agree. Consequently,at this moment she looked up and saw Max approaching her desk, an expression on his face fit to make any child scream and any ice cream melt, for Max was smiling, and even looking a little curious.

"Morning Betty," he said, brushing past her desk. Beth, in retaliation put her head down and scribbled next to the blank on her form,

'Undecided',

"Hang on!" Beth's head snapped back up, "My name is Beth, and I've been working her for three years, boss."

Max turned around and thought. He started laughing at his own joke before he'd spoken,

"And you've only sold three panes of double glazing in that time!"

Beth threw down her pen and started scratching the corner of the desk,

"But what if...?"

"No," said Max, a little too loudly, "If you don't sell any within the next week, Betty, you're out."

Beth muttered something under her breath,

"What's that?" retaliated Max, bending over her desk,

"Nothing," Beth replied,

"Gordon Bennet!" cried Max, eyeing the form Beth had been filling in, "A potential sale! You get off your arse right now, Betty, and go pay another visit to Mr. Sotheby!"

He gave a little skip and disappeared back across the room, pinching himself to make sure he wasn't dreaming,

"It's Beth!" she called after him, looking in dismay at the form on the desk before her. Well, she thought, if she could survive this, she could survive anything. Mr. Sotheby might just be the survival camp that Beth needed to get her life back on track. On second thoughts...
