The Promise of your Love

1. The Promise of your Love

I dote upon you like a child

Under beauty’s spell,

The friend I dreamt of all my life,

In love with you I fell.

When you face me with a smile

My life begins anew,

A poet’s tongue supplants my own

When I reflect on you.

When you are gone I cannot live,

But soon as you come near

A sadness overwhelms my soul,

You don’t love me, I fear.

At least prolong my futile hope,

Deceive me, gentle dove,

For every glance of yours preserves

The promise of your love.
