1. 19.46 to Kings Cross

INT. CAR - NIGHT

The sound of rain against a car roof drowns out the rumble
of the engine.

PETER (29) flicks his indicator on and pulls out onto a main
road.

Another car’s lights flash at him as well a violent sound of
a horn.

PETER barely flinches, a somber look covers his face, as he
slides the car into third gear and continues along the road.

The squeak of the windscreen wipers attracts PETER’S
attention.

Everything on screen begins to soften in focus.


INT. CAR - DAY (FLASHBACK)

PETER (23) drives along a university campus street, the rain
is falling hard, as students run for cover.

PETER smiles from the warmth of his car as he spots JENNIFER
(22), walking calmly through the rain using text books to
cover her flowing brown hair.

PETER looks down on the floor of the passenger seat, a pile
of rubbish fills the space.

PETER pulls over towards JENNIFER, leaning over the
passenger and rolling down the window he calls out.

PETER
Hi...

JENNIFER stops and turns towards the car.

JENNIFER
... Hi.

PETER, taken back by JENNIFER’S beauty, hesitates.

JENNIFER
Look, I don’t really want to be
standing in the rain.

PETER snaps out of his stare.


PETER
Yeah, sorry. Can I offer you a
lift?

JENNIFER weaves her hair through her fingers.

JENNIFER
Um...Yeah sure.

JENNIFER reaches for the door handle but it gets stuck.

PETER, quickly jumps out of his car and rushes round to the
passenger door.

PETER
Sorry, there’s are a way of doing
it. One sec.

PETER wiggles the door handle before yanking it open.

PETER grabs all of the rubbish the passenger seat floor and
throws into the back of the car.

PETER runs back to the driver’ side and gets in.

JENIFFER sits down in the car.

PETER turns to JENNIFER.

PETER
(to JENNIFER)
Peter.

Extending his arm.

JENNIFER
JENNIFER.

The two wet hands shake.

A car horn in the distance draws closer.


INT. CAR - NIGHT

The car horn brings PETER out of his daydream.

PETER sniffs and exhales loudly.

A CD in the car stereo begins to skip.

PETER slams his fist on the dashboard and the CD resumes
playing uninterrupted.


INT. CAR - DAY (FLASHBACK)

The music continues to play as PETER (25) and JENNIFER (24)
listen.

JENNIFER
Well...

PETER continues to listen intensely.

PETER
Its good.

JENNIFER looks doubtful.

PETER
No, no I really like it.

JENNIFER
Good, the guy at the store said you
would.

PETER turns to JENNIFER, they stare deep at each other.

PETER
I love you.

JENNIFER leans in and kisses PETER.

The CD beings to skip again.


INT. CAR - NIGHT

The sound of the skipping CD startles PETER into reality.

PETER ejects the CD and violently throws out of the
passenger side window.

PETER holds his hand in the air and lays it down onto the
passenger seat.

PETER runs his hand along the fabric of the seat.

One of fingers dips into a hole left by a cigarette burn.

PETER looks up at the empty seat as a ghostly JENNIFER now
sits in place.

The ghostly JENNIFER inhales a cigarette deeply.

JENNIFER
Last one and then we’re both giving
up.

PETER looks on in awe and nods.

PETER
(vacantly)
Yeah...

JENNIFER drops the cigarette in her lap, between her legs
and onto the seat burning a hole.

JENNIFER
Fuck!

Jennifer begins to rub the seat, attempting to brush away
the mark.

PETER, still in awe shakes his head.

PETER
Don’t worry.

A pothole in the road rattles the car as PETER grabs a hold
of the steering wheel. The ghostly figure of JENNIFER fades
away.

PETER reaches out for it.

PETER rubs his face.

PETER grabs hold of the rear view mirror.

In the mirror he can see a half naked JENNIFER sitting on
top of someone.

PETER turns his head quickly to see who it is.

CAMERA whips round matching PETER’S movement.


INT. CAR - NIGHT (FLASHBACK)

CAMERA whip continues into flashback scene.

JENNIFER (27), naked from the waist down, sits on PETER
(28).

JENNIFER lets out several moans and they struggle keep the
sexual act going in the tight space.

PETER grabs JENNIFER’S head and passionately kisses her
neck.

INT. CAR - NIGHT

JENNIFER and himself making love in the back of the car.

He lowers his head onto the steering wheel. Tears begin to
roll down his face.

PETER picks up his head and wipes away the tears.

An ambulance races past PETER in the opposite direction.


INT. AMBULANCE - DAY (FLASHBACK)

JENNIFER , 8 months pregnant, is lying on a hospital
stretcher in the back of an ambulance breathing in and out
heavily.

PETER is clutching her hand.

JENNIFER lets out a cry in agony.

PETER
Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.

PETER glances up at the paramedic, who looks unnerved.

PETER
I love you.

PETER grabs her hand even tighter.


INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM - DAY (FLASHBACK)

PETER paces around the room, looking at the double doors
leading to the birth room.

A DOCTOR emerges from the double doors.

PETER rushes towards him.

The DOCTOR puts an arm round PETER and begins to explain
something which is inaudible.

PETER drops to the floor in a heap.

INT. CAR - NIGHT

PETER, eyes streaming with tears, puts his foot down on the
pedal.

Bouncing dangerously along the road, PETER makes a sharp
turn onto a railway crossing barely getting under the
barrier.

PETER stops the car and turns off the engine. The rain is
still falling heavily.

PETER pulls down the sun visor above his head to reveal a
picture of JENNIFER and himself.

The sound of rattling draws PETER’S attention once again to
the rear view mirror.

PETER tilts the mirror down to see his baby, who has awoken
and is now playing with a rattle.

PETER
We’ll be back with mummy soon.

PETER smiles at the baby and the baby smiles back.

A harsh white light lights up the inside of the car as the
car begins to shake.

A train’s horn begins to blare out as the white light gets
brighter.

PETER closes his eyes.

The baby begins to cry.

The a passenger train slams into the car as we cut to black.
