7. Chapter 7

The next couple of weeks were pretty uneventful and I was spending more and more time with Fraser. Just as friends though. We were the first pair to finish our project and we both got A’s.

I don’t think anyone was that bothered about the fact I just showed up and started spending time with Fraser…well except his “fan club”.

Almost 6 weeks later I was in the practice rooms with Fraser. We spent a lot of time in there but I always avoided playing the piano and left it to him to play instruments.

I was sat on a desk swinging my legs before school and he was playing a piece that he had to learn for a music exam. He stood up from the stool and sat beside me on the desk.

“Why don’t you play?” I visibly flinched.

“I just…don’t.”

“You used to, didn’t you?” I nodded.

“I did.”

“Will you play something for me?”

“I-I don’t know.”

“Please?” I looked up at him and his eyes were glistening. Slowly, I stood up from the table and moved towards the piano.

I put my fingers on the keys and began to play “When You’re Gone” by Avril Lavigne.

“I always needed time on my own

I never thought I'd need you there when I cry

And the days feel like years when I'm alone

And the bed where you lie is made up on your side

When you walk away I count the steps that you take

Do you see how much I need you right now?

When you're gone

The pieces of my heart are missing you

When you're gone

The face I came to know is missing too

When you're gone

The words I need to hear to always get me through

The day and make it ok I miss you”

At some point while I was singing Fraser came and sat beside me and started singing as well.

“I've never felt this way before

Everything that I do reminds me of you

And the clothes you left, they lie on the floor

And they smell just like you,

I love the things that you do

When you walk away I count the steps that you take

Do you see how much I need you right now?

When you're gone

The pieces of my heart are missing you

And when you're gone

The face I came to know is missing too

And when you're gone

The words I need to hear to always get me through

The day and make it ok I miss you

We were made for each other

Out here forever I know we were, yeah

And all I ever wanted was for you to know

Everything I'd do, I'd give my heart and soul

I can hardly breathe

I need to feel you here with me, yeah

When you're gone

The pieces of my heart are missing you

And when you're gone

The face I came to know is missing too

And when you're gone

All the words I need to hear will always get me through

The day and make it ok I miss you”

Slow applause began behind us. We both whipped around to see Mr Peterson behind us.

“Mr Peterson!” I exclaimed.

“That was…amazing. Have you ever performed together?” We both shook our heads no. “Would you do it again? As a performance?”

“No,” I said bluntly.

“No?”

“No. This was a one off.”

“Shiv, think about it.” I could feel my eyes filling with tears.

“I said no!” I stood up, grabbed my bag and stalked out of the room. The door swung shut behind me and opened again with Fraser walking out quickly.

“Shiv, just listen to me.” I leaned back against the wall and gestured for him to continue. “I’m sorry about what just happened. And I need you to know, that I am here for you.” I nodded once. He stepped closer to me. “Ever since you got here…it’s just been…different and you’re different. When you’re upset it made me seem like an ass, but you never held a grudge. Just let me be there for you.” His eyes got darker and he brushed a stray hair from my cheek.

He leaned down and brushed his lips against mine. I pulled back quickly and I felt all tingly. I looked up at him and his eyes seemed to get another shade darker.

He kissed me again softly and I kissed him back. I pulled away.

“Okay,” I sighed.

“Okay?” he asked. “Are you sure?”

“Are you trying to talk me out of it?” I raised an eyebrow. He laughed.

“No, I just don’t want to pressure you into anything.”

“Well, you haven’t. You were being honest,” I smiled at him and intertwined our fingers.

“So you will go out with me?” he asked, confused.

“I would love to.”
