Uncontrollable

Harriet is always keeping her best friend Scarlett out of trouble. But this night she couldn't. It was the night of the 7th of December, just a week before the end of term when suddenly, everything changed.

How do you save someone that can’t be saved? They ignore you, fight you, want nothing to do with you. But all your doing is trying to give them a hand. You want to help.

You close the glass door quietly behind you and lean against it. You can feel a shiver start from cold air touching your exposed ankle. Your flannel pyjamas have shrunk a little since you last wore them. Your belly is still full from all the treats from the Christmas dinner last night. You lean against the door frame, letting your spine relax and you tilt your head back so it rests against on of the door’s glass windows. A fire is burning inside, and you can smell its escape through the chimney from where you are now. You take a deep breath, taking in the fresh morning air and the wood burnt scent. Christmas holidays are the best. Unlike other holidays, people understand that families go in to hibernation, and although there are lots of parties at the beginning of the season, theres about a week or 10days of solid family time where you can escape and forget about the craziness of the world that continues beyond your drive. I had been sent home from school a few days early. Something dark had happened. It was nothing to do with me, or at least it was not caused by me, but somehow I became a part of it. Her eyes were animal like that night. She was out of control, more than I had ever seen before, but this time you couldn’t help her.
