About MeMy Movellas - My Mumbles - Favourites

Ever since I can remember picking up a pen, I've wanted to write stories. My dream is to one day go from being a writer to becoming an author.

On my website, I blog about how I'm getting on and share useful information I've learnt to help other writers in the same position as me. I also maintain a calendar with details of competitions that I am aware of. Feel free to check it out at http://www.alisonaldridge.co.nr/

  • Both Sides of The Story - Write About Bullying Competition

RedfaeI decided to give one of the competitions on here a go... My entry is Daisy Chain. Now I've started it I am full of ideas so it might turn into a novel - expect to see more chapters. I hope everyone likes it, I know I'm enjoying writing it.

  • A Treasure Trove of Publishers

    RedfaeBook Publishers Accepting Submissions

A member of my local writers group Scribblers forwarded me an email from Brian Grove who recently published The Treasure Hunter's Handbook with Little Brown Books.

Brian's email was to let writers know that he has created a website that details 1,000 publishers that are currently looking for novels to publish. As a writer who has queried agents and publishers (usually found in the Writers & Artists Yearbook) I can tell you, first hand, how time consuming it can be to check if an agent/publisher is looking, what their submission guidelines are and whether they are interested in your genre - their tastes and requests change all the time and everyone has a different website layout.

In addition, his website is full of useful advice for authors looking to get published. This website looks like a time saving gold mine so all I can say is thank you Brian for sharing your hard work, for me this website is a real treasure. Perhaps I should consider buying his book and see what other riches I can find whilst I consider who on the list to submit to.

  • Opuss - Featured Writer

RedfaeWow! Just found a new page on Opuss. I lists the features authors and the Top Author Pic - and it's me :D @Redfae! I'm the Top Author picture :)

What a nice surprise. Woo Hoo!

The featured writers were @tdh, @ipuss and @sheriffof0 . So if you join Opuss they'll be worth following. I already follow all three of them and they always post good reads especially @ipuss

Now, to work out this website and find a way on to the featured writers lists here lol.
  • Win a Critique - Feed A Read

    RedfaeWin a Critique
We all want to be read, even published writers. So, on Feed A Reed they are offering the chance to budding writers to be read by an editor at Random House. To enter, all you have to do is read the first 6 pages of 6 books and answer a question about each one. Deadline is 31 May 2012. It looks as if this competition runs every month so check back.

    Self Publish
With Feed A Read they also offer your a chance to Self Publish. You can publish your novel with them for free on their website or for a fee of £88 your book can be made available to major online publishers (like Amazon) and high street book shops (like Waterstones). The website appears to have good reviews. I can't say I've looked into Self publishing that much so don't know how good this is but the sales pitch was very good.

The books that do well also get a chance to receive a critique from supporting publishers of the site. They can offer you a publishing deal. The website is funded by the Arts Council.

  • Blogging

RedfaeI use Blogger and until I know whether this website is for me will depend on whether I blog here too. My blog is about writing and I share things that I've discovered along the way in my journey to finding a publisher for my novels. The blog can be found on my website or blogger.

RedfaeThanks for the advice Adam. I'll blog more on here once I've decided that I'm staying but at the moment I'm a member of so many writing communities its hard to keep up so I don't want to start blogging and then be gone. I'm really busy that I'm just looking for a site where I can dip in and out when I can and not somewhere that I need to be constantly logged into just to be read - I simply don't have the time for that. I'd rather be writing :) Which is probably why I'm loving Opuss at the moment.
RedfaeThanks Adam - I kinda guessed that. It's the usual set up for every writers network. This reminds me a lot of WeBook and I always wished they'd get a mobile app. I'm really loving Opuss - I've only been on a month but I'm often ranked in the top 20 and have a post in the daily top 10 which is really motivating. You should check it out. It's great for a quick read or writing fix.
RedfaeHi Adam, Opuss is brand new and currently only for iPhone but next development is planned for PC, then other mobile devices. I use it for a quick fix when I have 5 mins. I usually draft in my PC and then email to Opuss (I can blog on blogger the same way). Or draft in a notes app and paste to Opuss. I am hoping this app will be suitable for longer works like my novels. It reminds me a lot of WeBook which I loved but they don't have an app version and I'm often on the go and only really get infront my PC evenings or weekends. I want people to read my work but I know everyone is in the same boat. I'm hoping to be able to read when I invigilate an exam rathen than reading a book - that's my plan. Good luck with Opuss. I'll try and find the graph you mentioned :)
