The Day To Remember

1. The Day to Remember

I closed my eyes for just a second or two. I felt the harsh heat burn my face as I went into the furthest part of my mind trying to wake myself up. Nothing. The sound was a slur in my head, their words just noises. I couldn’t bring myself to open my eyes again. I wanted to rewind, and never see what I had seen. A siren appeared out of the slurring. I opened my eyes.

The smoke was surrounding everything. Only a hot golden glow amongst it all was visible. My heart was in my mouth, beating like a group of angry drums. My mouth was dry and my brain went numb. I couldn’t move. As my legs trembled under me I heard the screams, every one of them echoing through my body scraping along my insides over and over. I started to squint as the smoke burnt my eyes. “Run” I told myself, but I couldn’t. The marathon of people around me crying and screaming, some ran, some fell to the floor as their legs gave up on them. They too would never forget that morning, where everything crumbled around them, leaving no glimmer of hope. Faces were blurred as they hurtled past me, at least half the people of their phones, but not saying anything, just meaningless screams of terror and fear. Some filmed on cameras, almost as if people felt they needed something to prove it happened. I had no doubt in my mind that I would remember that day until the  day my heart would stop beating. Over and over in my head I saw it play. The crash and the sight of the building sinking down below the ground, down into nothing. The thousands of people turning their heads and staring in disbelief, just as I did. A normal day it was, just another day. Just the same routine and the same faces. But no day will be the same anymore. I would never forget the plane crashing, and the tower smacking into the ground. The flames and smoke enclosing me in, the thousands running and crying out loved ones' names. 9/11 changed everything.
