New to Movellas

Pens (or keyboards) at the ready

You've just joined Movellas, what next? (or maybe you've been a member forever and just want a reminder of that wonderful new feeling)

You have just entered a world of writing, reading and sharing. But it can all be a little scary at first. everyone is talking and joking and seems to know each other (that first day at school feeling). We call this Early Onset Movellas Fever (EOMF for short), but we are pretty good at dealing with it now.

Symptoms

Strange thoughts that may include:

  1. How am I supposed to get people to comment on my stories, to like them and favourite them?
  2. I'll never get 10,000 people to read what I write.
  3. I'm rubbish at writing.
  4. Maybe I should curl up in bed with tea, toast and The Hunger Games.
  5. What would it be like if we didn't have any thumbs? That would suck.

A giddy or nervous feeling, often felt around your left ankle.

Palpitations and a headache.

Constantly checking under your Movellas to see if there has been new comments or likes.

Smashing your computer into a thousand pieces.

Diagnosis

If you are experiencing any three of the above symptoms, it is likely you are suffering with EOMF.

A doctor, Movellas user, teacher or me will be able to confirm this diagnosis.

Treatment

There are many treatment options, and with technology rushing ahead more are always becoming available. Below is a list of the most popular and effective, but please let me know if there are alternative approaches that we are unsure of.

  1. Check out this video, it explains a lot.
  2. Write a short story or poem (it does not have to be long, short often works best to start with) and upload it. Add a nice description and cover for that professional look.
  3. Introduce yourself on the forums. Let people know there that you have written something and are looking for feedback. (Make sure you do it nicely, people respond much better and are more likely to be nice in return.)
  4. Add your Movella to this group. It has been made just for your first Movella and is a great place to meet other new users and begin reading, writing and giving your own feedback.
  5. Find other groups that are interesting or suitable.
  6. Leave me a comment on my blog and I will check your Movella out.
  7. Find a competition to enter. We are always running lots of competitions with great prizes. Working to a deadline and with a specific purpose is a great way to make you focus on a project and make sure you finish it.

Outlook

EOMF usually only lasts for a few days. After this period, it is common to have hundreds of reads and comments, a list of Movellas THIS high to read, and a thousand ideas to write.

  • Glen SherwoodHi - I came to Movellas after reading your piece in Writing Mag - thanks for the tip! I'm enjoying being on here, and have had a few views, but if you have the chance to take a look I'd much appreciate it. This is helping me focus on who my audience might be - both agewise, and also genre wise: I've only posted three chapters so far, but overall the book could be classed as adventure, action, historical, fan fiction or romance. In one way, that could be a good thing - but in another way, it's hard to know where to market it. So again, any thoughts will be very welcome! Thanks! Glen
  • darlinghoranRead my fanfic its comming up soon!!!
  • FiddlerzviI've been writing off and on literally for decades with little luck in publishing. I could blame it on my schedule as a doctor -- too many years having a 24-7 call schedule -- but plenty of other doctors have managed to combine writing and medicine. The real problem was the off and on had too much off and not enough on. Internet writers circles helped me sell a few short stories, but I really wanted to publish a book. Second only to becoming a grandfather--something I had no say about--becoming a published novelist was my biggest goal.

An unrelenting series of rejections almost had me ready to give up. Then Lilly Press accepted my novel IMPLAC, an evil robot story. I was ecstatic. Even the editing process was a joy. Unfortunately, Lilly went bankrupt and it was back to the slush pile for me. At least now I knew that some professionals valued my work. "Query Tracker" forum taught me how to write a decent query, I sent out a batch of letters to small publishers, and in 2010 Eternal Press accepted A VIRTUAL AFFAIR. No ecstasy this time, but I was still happy that at age 68 I would finally have a book for sale. It's never too late to pursue your dream.

The book was published on January 8, 2011. A week earlier, my son called me, "Dad, Rosemarie has gone into labor." Eight hours later, Aliana was born. I flew down to see her the day the book was published. Even though I had striven for many years to get published, at this moment, the book didn't matter.

    I have my priorities.
  • SNIFFLE14How do I search something on the app? It takes me to a page with stories and not a search engine.
