Luke. He was standing right there. Right in front of me. He looked about as shocked as I probably did. I wasn't sure if it he was shocked to see me and I was alive or because I kissed Daryl. Mason had probably told Luke that I was alive, so I guessed the last one was the answer to that.
I didn't know whether to hug him or walk away. I was still mad at him, even after all those years, but I was also happy that he was alive. Somehow it didn't surprise me he was in the U.S.A. Before all this, I used to stay updated on where Luke and the other boys were and what they were doing.
I looked around, trying to avoid eye contact with Luke. The other boys also looked shocked. They probably didn't think I'd be able to survive in this world.
They didn't really look different. Michael did, but only because his hair was blonde instead of whatever colour it was before the world went to shit. I had seen Mikey with blonde hair before. When I first met him, his hair was blonde - his natural hair colour. I always thought he looked great with blonde hair, so I never really understodd why he dyed it. Even though I had to admit he looked great with brown hair, but after he began to dye his hair all those crazy colours it just got too weird and I didn't really get it.
I looked at Daryl and Mason. I could tell Mason was trying really hard not to smile. Daryl looked confused. He was the only one who didn't have a clue what was going on, except Rick.
I grew tired of the awkward silence between the 8 of us. I turned around to go back to the prison when Rick spoke up. "Who are these people?" he asked. None of us said anything, only Daryl responded with a shrug. "So you brought back complete strangers?"
"They aren't strangers, Rick. Mason and I know them. Or, we used to," I said, mumbling the last part. "We were, uh, friends when we lived in Australia." Rick sighed and looked at the 4 boys. "They aren't dangerous. Not to us, anyway."
Rick looked at the 4 boys again for a moment before telling us to take them back to the prison. "They can't stay in the cells, though."
"What? So they're supposed to sleep the same place as Merle?" I asked Rick, who nodded in response. "I'm not letting my friends sleep the same place as Merle!"
"He's not that bad, Maddie," Daryl said.
"You have to say that, he's your brother," I snapped at him, not meaning to. And I could see my attitude had hurt him. Daryl and I rarely fought or snapped at each other, and so on. But whenever we did, it was over something stupid. We had only ever had one serious fight and that was about Merle. When Daryl considered leaving the prison, the people who had been there for him for over a year and his girlfriend to be with his brother who treated him like shit. So since then I hadn't excatly been a fan of Merle's.
"We'll figure something out!" Rick said, "but for now you can go back to the prison." I rolled my eyes and we headed back to the prison. When we got back Mason showed Luke, Ashton, Calum and Michael where they could stay until Rick had decided whether they could be trusted or not, let alone if they could even stay. Daryl went into our cell. I wanted to follow him and cuddle with him, but I decided to give him some space.
I sat down on the stairs and looked around. The 4 guys were sitting in the corner where Mason had told them to be. They were smiling, probably thankful that someone had found them. I didn't know where they'd been before they came to the prison, but my first thought was that they'd been out there, all alone. I felt sorry for them.
I looked at the big, slatted door. Carol and Mason were standing by it, talking, probably about the new members of the group. I couldn't stand the connection the two of them had had ever since Carol walked in on Daryl and me.
"Maddie?" I turned my head to see Luke sitting next to me. That was the first time I'd heard his voice in years. I flashed a weak, awkward smile. "It's, uh, it's nice to see you again," he said awkwardly. I really hadn't thought about Luke during the out-break. Only once had I thought about him, and that was at Hershels farm. While beingat Hershels farm, I didn't really have much to do. I usually just relaxed and read books, or went hunting with Daryl, which I rarely did. But one day I was lying in Daryl's and my tent all alone. I was bored out of my mind, and decided to try find the book I had found in one of the cars on the freeway. But while looking through my bag in which I knew the book was, I found an old picture. It was of me and Luke, from the first gig him and the others played together - except Ashton who wasn's a part of the band at that time. I really didn't know what to say to him. I smiled slightly and looked away. I heard him sigh. "Are you really still pissed at me?" I nodded. "Maddie, it's been years! Please just get over it!"
"I can't, Luke! The way you treated me was completly unacceptable. You were my best friend, I had no one except you, and you know that!" I snapped, before getting up and going to Daryl's and my cell.
When I got to the cell Daryl was lying on the bed. He looked at me as I sat down on the bed, next to him. "Care to explain?" he mumbled.
I let out a sigh. "I don't know, Daryl."
"Weren't you the one who told me that we shouldn't have any secrets?" he said, sitting up in the bed.
"Ugh, I know, Daryl! Okay, I'll tell you! So basically..." I said, and then I told him about everything that had happened between Luke and I all those years ago.
