The next day I woke up bright and early to go for a jog. I went every Saturday morning after breakfast as it was the only bit of exercise I did outside of school! I pulled my blonde hair back into a ponytail and put a vest top and joggers on. I seized my iPod off my desk and thumped downstairs. I shoved my running trainers on and emerged outside into the sunshine. I stood still for a moment, basking in the sunlight. I placed my headphones in my ears, put my iPod in my pocket and jogged off down the street.
Even music couldn't distract me from Jack. Maybe I should just talk to him, I thought to myself. Then I could get to know him better and I would have actually spoken to him.
Who was I kidding? I couldn't even look at him without going red let alone speak to him. I would just have to wait for him to speak to me which would maybe show if he was the slightest bit interested in me.
A roaring sound entered my ears and I whipped round to see a car approaching at full speed. I was yanked back and I saw the car zoom past me from the safety of the pavement. I had been thinking so much that I had managed to walk right out onto the road.
"Are you okay?!". I turned curiously. Jack was clinging onto me, his defined face and his mesmerising eyes filled with concern. Why did he have to see me now when I was red and sweaty from jogging?
"I think so...must not have been concentrating again".
"Lucy, you jogged out onto a busy road. I don't think you were concentrating either!", Jack spluttered.
"I'm fine honestly", I said, blushing at his concern and the fact that he actually knew my name.
"Come on, lets sit down for a bit, you must be shaken up", he said gently. I nodded and we sat down on a park bench in a children's park a little away from the road.
"Now are you sure you're okay?", Jack asked again.
"I am completely fine", I assured him.
"I thought you were gone..", Jack whispered. "Anyway, sorry about that girl yesterday".
"You didn't do anything wrong, you were so kind helping that boy!", I told him. "If you don't mind me asking..why were you upset yesterday?". To my surprise, I was actually quite calm talking to Jack. He wasn't intimidating and made me feel welcome to talk to him.
"Well, I've never told anyone this before really. I know I can trust you though", Jack said, looking me straight in the eyes.
Then he told me. That girl yesterday, Hannah, had been his girlfriend once, back at the start of year nine. Jack told me how he absolutely adored her and always looked out for her. I could imagine how well he treated her. However, the spiteful girl threw it back in his face. She lied and cheated. When she got bored of him, she dumped him. I reached my hand over to touch Jack's sympathetically and he clung onto it. I felt safe with our fingers entwined. His hand was soft and warm.
"I can truthfully say I was in love with Hannah. I got so upset yesterday because she promised something that she wouldn't keep. It wasn't the truth. She once promised me she would never leave me. She promised she loved me. And I believed her", Jack muttered angrily, kicking a stone across the floor.
I shuffled across the bench and awkwardly put my arm around Jack. He flung his arms around me and pulled me in close. I automatically hugged back. This was the safest I had ever felt in my life. The scent of vanilla entered my nostrils as I buried my head into his chest. Jack pressed his lips to the top of my head.
"I can't believe she hurt you like that Jack. Who in their right mind would want to hurt you?", I sighed.
"Well Hannah went downhill. Now she has a new boyfriend every week. Hannah was just not the one for me. She didn't respect the love I had for her. You do don't you?". I pulled away so I could see his face.
"Are you saying you...love me?", I said, trying to look into his eyes to see if he was lying. I only got lost in how amazing they were. Jack smiled my favourite smile.
"Yes. I love you Lucy", he whispered, tucking a strand of loose hair behind my ear. "You're perfect. You're beautiful".
"I love you too", I whispered back. Then once again his arms were wrapped around me and I closed my eyes to try and work out what was happening. Surely it was a dream.
