A Tribute to the Antihero: A Writing Competition

Because the main character doesn't necessarily have to be perfect ...

Do you dare challenge the typical traits of a protagonist?

Normally, the main character in fictional works has some array of admirable attributes; whether it's courage, the right values, or an endearing personality. These traits are what make it possible to sympathize with him/her, and as the most important character (or one of them), this is crucial for how the story is received.

Sometimes, though, these heroic qualities cannot be found in the protagonist. Instead, he or she may do terrible things for the right reasons or the right thing for the wrong reasons. An example is Walter White from the successful series Breaking Bad (2008-2013). Although he isn't charming nor on the right side of the law, he still manages to carry the entire plot and keep the viewers interested in what goes on in his life. But if one can't relate to who he is or what he does - then what is it that makes him such a good main character?

How to Participate

We want to challenge you to write a captivating movella about someone who lacks the conventional heroic qualities. It can be anything from a short story to a poem to a fanfic with a twist - as long as the main character can be characterized as an antihero

This is not limited to writing either, feel free to create a cover or fanart based on the antihero of your choice (or one of your own design...)

Other examples of antiheroes include (but are not limited to) Dexter Morgan from the series Dexter, Hank Moody in Californication, and Homer Simpson from The Simpsons. There are so many different types, so feel free to get creative - the more innovative, the better :)

Prizes

The winning entries will be shared on Movellas' social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.)

Best Story will receive a hardcover copy of The Weight of Zero by Karen Fortunati, or a $20 Amazon gift card.

The Runner Up will receive a copy of Liars, Inc. by Paula Stokes, or a $15 Amazon gift card.

Best Cover/Fanart/Trailer will receive a copy of Real Heroes Cry, or a $15 gift card!

It's high time the antihero made a comeback. We live in a world that's nowhere near perfect and neither are the delightful humans who live within it. Tell us a tale that defies the sterotypes we've come to tire of and bring on those characters that are real, fallible, and who we all can't help but identify with.
