Halloween Competition

This Year's Halloween Competition!

'Tis the season for spooky stories, teeth-crackin' candy, and other bone-chilling business

Ah, October! Withered leaves, pumpkin lattes at Starbucks, it's the autumn holiday and - of course - almost Halloween.

Halloween comes from Celtic paganism and was more formerly known as All Hallows' Eve. This was a time when it was believed that ghosts and spirits came out to haunt, and the Celts would appease these spirits by giving them "treats."

In the last half century, this treat-giving has become a feast in itself. Although it came from Celtic folklore, it has since been taken over by the Christian Church, and has been further commercialized in the U.S. where it went from being a very spiritual feast to more of a celebration of the culture, both literary and that found at its roots in European folklore.

How to Participate

For this competition, we want you to write a story based on Halloween. Your story can deal with any aspect of Halloween - the holiday itself, the history behind it, a horror movie that surrounds it - all we wish is to stir up these spirits with tales worth reading!

Write a story based on Halloween. Keep in mind that Halloween is not just a festival, it is influenced by many, very different cultures, and it is also a day of the year where an individual can transform themselves into anything they want.

Halloween can be about the costumes or the pumpkin pies, the hot chocolate or lanterns, if that's what you are into. It can be scary too and celebrated with a zombie story or horrific tale. Just in case we hadn't already said it, your story can also be family-friendly if you prefer to write a story about carving pumpkins or submit a poem about the joys of trick-or-treating :)

Design a Halloween cover or submit your own fanart. Not a fan of writing a story for this one? Draw instead or put those design skills to the test in making a cover of another movella in the competition, or a story that hasn't even been revealed yet... we like creative entries too, so try to scare us, if you dare!

Winners will have their stories and covers promoted on Movellas' social media (Facebook,
